 Election of 1960  Nixon vs. Kennedy  First televised debate  The night, image replaced the printed words as the natural language of politics  New policy towards communism  Flexible response  Kennedy increased defense spending  Increased conventional nonnuclear forces such as troops, ships, and artillery  Also created an elite branch of the army called the Special Forces, or Green Berets  He also tripled the overall nuclear capabilities of the US  Cuban Revolution of 1959  White Eisenhower was still president, Fidel Castro win control of Cuba in 1959  He took over American investments in Cuba angering US owners  On January 3, 1981 Eisenhower cuts off diplomatic relations from Cuba  Castro turns to the Soviet Union for financial support  About 10% of Cuba population runs to  Bay of Pigs Invasion  JKF inherits Eisenhower policy  Has doubts about the invasion  It fails  Cuban Missile Crisis  USSR begins to supply Cuba with weapons  Castro and Khrushchev trying to bring medium range nuclear weapons to Cuba  Kennedy warns Russia not to send any missile to Cuba  Missiles in Cuba could reach US  We agree to move our missiles out of Turkey if they stop taking missiles to Cuba  Back to Germany  Remember Germany was divided after WWII  The city of Berlin also divided  3 million East Germans have left to escape communism  Khrushchev wants to close all roads between east and west Germany

 Kennedy will not allow it  The Berlin Wall  On August 13, 1961 soldiers start to build the Berlin Wall  the wall is built to make crossing from east to west impossible  Symbol of communism  If you try to cross, you got shot  Kennedy Assassination  November 22, 1963  Kennedy goes to Dallas, Texas  In the car: JFK and his wife, Texas governor John Connally and his wife  There were 3 shots  Hit Kennedy in the head and throat  Shots came from the Book Depository  Lee Harvey Oswald  Former marine  Was a communist  Pro Castro  Was employee of the Book Depository  Caught two hours later at a movie theater  Vice President Lydon Johnson sworn into office as President on Air Force One  Jack Ruby shoots Oswald 
