Culture: Learned and shared beliefs, values, and norms, of a particular group - Will influence how we think and our behaviors

Cultural Expression: What you see on the outside - Language and spirituality - Can be food and art

Unconscious bias - bias we are unaware about and that happen outside of our control Implicit bias - bias we are aware about and that we must acknowledge how it impacts our behavior Culturally congruent care - applying knowledge of how culture influences health practices and beliefs about care Cultural Competence - we need to be culturally sensitive Cultural humility - requires us to take the responsibility of active listening so we can better understand where a patient is coming from

World View: Etic view - as an outsider Emic view - as an insider

Diversity:

Primary Characteristics: things we know and see easily - above the surface Secondary Characteristics: things we don’t always know an cannot see easily - below the surface

How can we develop cultural awareness? - Recognizing a patient’s culture, beliefs, and values

Joint Commission's 4 questions of culture: - Helps increase trust between healthcare provider and patient 1. Call - What do you call your problem/what do you think is wrong? 2. Cause - What do you think caused the problem? 3. Cope - How are you coping with your condition? 4. Concerns - What are your concerns regarding the condition and the possible treatment options?

Cultural Assessment - LEARN Model L - Listen to the patient’s perspectives; state “tell me more” E - Explain your perception of the problem A - Acknowledge your differences between perceptions R - Recommendations should involve the patient N - Negotiate a treatment plan that benefits a patient’s culture

Cultural Competence: What to practice:

  • Communication, Understanding, and Sensitivity

The nurse is caring for a patient of Hispanic descent who speaks no English, and is working with an interpreter. Which action should the nurse take? - Look at the patient when talking

A nurse is assessing culturally diverse population groups for the risk of suicide. Which assessment question will provide the most culturally relevant information? - How is suicide viewed in your culture?
