What is a RAW File? - A file that is RAW had not been processed or compressed by the camera - The camera naturally compresses and processes an image into a JPEG when it is not set to RAW, which does not allow for the same flexibility in terms of tonal color data. - The image processor in the camera automatically develops the image when turning it into a JPEG ; this allows the camera to configure settings such as brightness, sharpening, contrast, or color. - The camera’s processing of an image into a JPEG can not be undone and can cause some of the images potential tonalities to become discarded in the editing process. - Allowing the file to be RAW until configured via editing can allow for greater flexibility and potential creative manipulation of the photo. More Options for Exposure Issues - The white balance is one factor which can be manipulated by the camera in the process of configuration to JPEG, so if the file is left raw - the white balance is under the complete control of the photographer and editor. - Noise reduction can be more effective when applied to a RAW file as opposed to a previously configured JPEG from a digital camera. - Once the camera configures the image into a JPEG, since it can not be undone - there are some potential highlights, shadows, and details that are lost before any further editing. - If the file is captured RAW edits can still be made in Adobe Lightroom, but they will not be automatically and permanently placed on the image by the camera - and thus can potentially be reversed if necessary.

For Editing in Adobe Lightroom - Create a duplicate layer so that no changes are made to the background image and evaluate the image for contrast / brightness. (Non-destructive editing) - Use a levels adjustment layer to correct the tone of the image / slide the gray slider until the colors appear correct and then evaluate color. - The spot healing brush and the clone tool are useful for cleaning up unwanted elements - Burning and Dodging can also be applied at this time to make local adjustments - The image can be straightened by using rotation or the ruler tool - Resize the image, then flatten and save as a high quality JPG.

What is a RAW File?
- A file that is RAW had not been processed or compressed by the camera
- The camera naturally compresses and processes an image into a JPEG when it is not set
to RAW, which does not allow for the same flexibility in terms of tonal color data.
- The image processor in the camera automatically develops the image when turning it into
a JPEG ; this allows the camera to configure settings such as brightness, sharpening,
contrast, or color.
- The camera’s processing of an image into a JPEG can not be undone and can cause some
of the images potential tonalities to become discarded in the editing process.
- Allowing the file to be RAW until configured via editing can allow for greater flexibility
and potential creative manipulation of the photo.
More Options for Exposure Issues
- The white balance is one factor which can be manipulated by the camera in the process of
configuration to JPEG, so if the file is left raw - the white balance is under the complete
control of the photographer and editor.
- Noise reduction can be more effective when applied to a RAW file as opposed to a
previously configured JPEG from a digital camera.
- Once the camera configures the image into a JPEG, since it can not be undone - there are
some potential highlights, shadows, and details that are lost before any further editing.
- If the file is captured RAW edits can still be made in Adobe Lightroom, but they will not
be automatically and permanently placed on the image by the camera - and thus can
potentially be reversed if necessary.
