BUAD 251.

The Golden Circle Simon Sinek

The article “The Golden Circle” revolves around the idea that people don’t buy what you do, rather they buy why you do it. Sinek talks about how having a purpose, a meaning, a belief behind a business or an idea is more important than being in it just for the money. He talks about how the goal is to not to just sell to people who need what you have, rather the goal is to sell to people who believe what you have. The goal is not to just hire people who need a job, instead it is about hiring people who believe what you believe. Sinek describes in this article that owning a business is more about the belief and the goal behind it, not about the great idea or innovation. One way this article connects to our class is through the idea of leaders versus managers discussed in chapter 14. In this chapter we learned that leaders focus on vision, mission, goals, and objectives as well as the fact they are concerned with ends. On the other hand, managers are focused on productivity and efficiency and are concerned with means. This article puts this into perspective with the Samuel Pierpoint Langley versus the Wright brother’s example. In this example, Langley can be viewed as a manager. Langley was concerned with becoming rich and famous and hired people who worked for the paycheck. The Wright brothers can be viewed as leaders in this example. They were driven by a cause, a purpose, a belief, and they worked with those who believed in their dream and worked with blood, sweat, and tears. Another way this article can connect to our class is through transformational leadership. Transformational leadership is leadership that generates awareness and acceptance of the purpose and mission and gets others to see beyond their own needs and self-interests for the good of the group. This is shown through the Dr. King example. King sent out no invitations nor did he post

anywhere the time and date of his speech, but yet 250,000 people showed up. These people showed up because they believed in his cause and made it their own. One critical thinking question I have is who else do you think is an example of a transformational leader like Dr. King. My answer to this question would be Martin Luther King Jr. He had a dream, a vision, a belief that he was so passionate about and spoke about to others. His passion and speeches caused others to consume his dream and follow along with him. A second critical thinking question I have is do you believe money and market conditions are the key to success? My answer to this question would be no, sure it can help but overall, it is not what will build your company or idea. You need to have a true goal and/or belief behind what you’re doing if you want to gain the right customers and following.
