ELE 410 Lesson Plan Notes

Elements adapted from Wiggins & McTighe (2000) and Bybee (2006)

Stage 1- Desired Results

A. Content Standard(s): [Comes from professional standards in your field]. This lesson plan will be written for an assigned social studies standard.

Correctly code and then write out the social studies standard.

B. Student Objective (outcome):

A=Audience B=Behavior C= Condition D= Degree

The student: This will be an observable, measurable outcome that students should be able to demonstrate and that you can assess. Your assessment evidence in Stage 2 must show how you will assess this objective(s).

Your learning activities in Stage 4 must be designed and directly linked to achieve the understandings and demonstrate the desired outcome (objective).

Stage 2- Assessment Evidence

A: Summative Assessment: Create an observable and measurable task where the student applies what s/he has learned and demonstrates her/his understanding directly aligned to the lesson’s objective(s). (This is also the evaluation phase listed below.)

Describe what the student will do to demonstrate his/her learning.

Stage 3- Learning Plan

A. Teacher Content Knowledge

What are the specific concepts the teacher needs to know to be able to teach the lesson effectively? Indicate and then define the concepts to build your content knowledge.

B. Student Prior Knowledge/Experiences and Potential Misconceptions What prior knowledge/ideas/misconceptions might students have about this topic that teachers should consider when planning out their lessons? (e., based on developmental level, other grades, previous lessons, movies, field trips, travel, etc.)

C. Materials What physical and/or digital materials will both the teacher and the student need for this lesson? Make two lists.

D. Classroom Management ● What difficulties/problems/issues do you anticipate happening throughout the course of the lesson? ● How will you proactively ensure student success related to time, physical space, materials, and transitions?

E. Differentiated Instruction ● Indicate how you will support students in each of the following: content, process, product, and learning environment. These are in response to students’ readiness, learner profiles, and interests. ○ If you have students in the following populations, how will you specifically address their needs according to their plans? ■ English Learners ■ 504 plans ■ IEPs

F. Phases ● Engagement: How will you introduce the lesson activities and content and get students excited? ● Teacher creates interest ● Teacher generates curiosity ● Teacher raises questions to uncover what students know or think about the concept or topic ● When connecting to students’ prior experiences, be mindful of doing this through an asset lens.

● Exploration: How will you promote conceptual change through interactive activities? ● Teacher encourages students to work together without direct instruction from the teacher ● Teacher observes and listens to the students as they interact.

○ This could be a learning experience to reinforce the concepts from the lesson or it could extend their learning of the concepts.

Stage 4- Lesson Reflection

Reflection: The lesson reflection is completed after the lesson is taught.
