Classical & Operant Conditioning Worksheet

Directions: Identify the Unconditioned Stimulus (US), Unconditioned Response (UR), Conditioned Stimulus (CS) and Conditioned Response (CR) in each of the following examples.

  1. Every December your family celebrates a holiday where gifts are exchanged. Getting gifts as a child always got you very excited. Now as each December approaches, you start feeling excitement.

US – the presents

UR – the child getting excited

CS – Christmas decorations

CR – the excitement

  1. Taylor plugged in the toaster one day and got shocked. Now when she goes to plug in the toaster, she is nervous.

US – The shock

UR – jumping in pain

CS – plugging in the toaster

CR – becoming nervous

  1. You are dating someone and whenever you hold hands or kiss, you get butterflies in your tummy. Now years later, you hear a song that was popular when you were dating, and it makes you think of this high school sweetheart. You feel all warm and fuzzy now.

US – the sight of your significant other/sweetheart

UR – love from the sweetheart

CS – the song / love song

CR – the warm fuzzy feeling

  1. Geraldine had an automobile accident at the corner of 32nd Street and Cherry Avenue. Whenever she approaches the intersection now, she begins to feel uncomfortable. Her heart begins to beat faster, she gets butterflies in her stomach, and her palms become sweaty.

US – the car accident

UR – anxiety

CS – the intersection

CR – her anxiety

Directions: Identify if these examples are classical or operant conditioning. Also, identify the Unconditioned Stimulus (US), Unconditioned Response (UR), Conditioned Stimulus (CS) and Conditioned Response (CR) in each of the following examples if they are classical conditioning. If they are operant conditioning, identify the type of reinforcement.

  1. Your father gives you a credit card at the end of your first year in college because you did so well. As a result, your grades continue to get better in your second year. - Type of conditioning: operant conditioning - This is a positive reinforcement

  2. You eat a new food and then get sick because of the flu. However, you develop a dislike for the food and feel nauseated whenever you smell it. - Type of conditioning: classical conditioning - Us- the flu sickness - Ur- the nausea - Cs- the new food - Cr- the nausea to the new food

  3. Every time someone flushes a toilet in the apartment building, the shower becomes very hot and causes the person to jump back. Over time, the person begins to jump back automatically after hearing the flush, before the water temperature changes. - Type of conditioning: classical conditioning - Us- the hot shower - Ur- jumping back from the water - Cr- the toilet flushing - Cs- jump back from the flush

  4. A professor has a policy of exempting students from the final exam if they maintain perfect attendance during the quarter. His students’ attendance increases dramatically. - Type of conditioning: operant conditioning - This is a negative reinforcement
