Strengths And Weakness Of India

India is a large country and it is located in Southern Asia. Surrounded by other countries and benefitting geographical features, it seems that India is a superior country with many assets to help their country and the country's needs. They have many strengths considering their geographical and military size, and their influence globally. However, with every strength, there is a weakness. Similar to many countries, India has instabilities concerning their government, which exposes the issue of population pressure. A government cannot be without flaws, but most countries have made their government systems work to benefit their own country. India, however, has no experience with governing themselves because they have grown used to depending on another to rule for them. First the Arabs, then the British colonialism, India has always been ruled by another country or nation. India has no background with government and struggles with how to govern their country to help benefit themselves. Yes, they are respected and is almost a superpower country, but are held back with their weak government structure. Their government is a dual polity system and was influenced by the British Crown, therefore they have a central authoritative figure. This figure represents India as a whole, which can be misleading. Publicly, India may be expressed as a strong, united nation, but it is a weak democracy. Due to corruption and public institutions in the Indian government, this makes the regime fragile. The main figure of the government can be bribed or blackmailed into making a new law that only aids the person who is responsible of the bribery of blackmailing. This makes the Indian democracy incredibly weak. With the government infrastructures, the problem of allies and adversaries comes forward; India has to know where loyalties lie. Having China, a superpower, as a neighbor is unfortunate; especially if one is not a friend, but a foe. It may not be straightforward, but China and India have problems because India is supporting the independence of Tibet. Tibet is a small region in China, near India, and wishes to be independent. If India continues to support Tibet, they may come to face China's rage. With their weak system,

India's Five Years Plan

Origin Five year plans were first introduced in the erstwhile Soviet Union in 1928 for controlled and rapid economic development. Much of the Soviet industrial successes are a result of the implementation of its five year plans. In 1950, India's prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, impressed by the Soviet system, adopted five year plans as a model for economic development, and established the Planning Commission which was to act independent of any cabinet and was answerable only to the Prime Minister, who is also Chairperson of the commission. Draft plans were to be approved by the National Development Council, comprising the Planning Commission and the Chief Ministers of all states. An approved plan is then passed by the cabinet and then in.. more content... But Nehru favors controls over private enterprise. "An army," he explained, "does not occupy a country by placing a soldier in every nook and cranny: a gun mounted on a hill enables an army to control surrounding areas effectively." Overview of the Plans The economy in India is based in part on planning through its five years plans developed, executed and monitored by the Planning Commission. With the Prime Minister as the ex officio Chairman, the commission has a nominated Deputy Chairman, who has rank of a Cabinet minister. Montek Singh Ahluwalia is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Commission. The tenth plan completed its term in March 2007 and the eleventh plan is currently underway. In 1951, India's first Five Year Plan (1951–55) was unveiled. While the first plan placed greater emphasis on agriculture, the second Five Year Plan (1956–60) sought to build up an industrial base for the country, particularly in the public sector. However, the chief landmark in this period was wide ranging and broad–based reforms in the village power structure by the abolition of the Zamindari system and the creation of cooperatives among the rural poor to stimulate agricultural growth. The Third Five Year Plan (1961–65) was interrupted by the 1962 war with China and the 1965 war with Pakistan, and it was evident that its targets would not be met. Its main basis was the conviction that an increase in agricultural

Ramayana Essay

Ramayana Ramayana and some of the Hindu virtues derived from it The poetic author, Valmiki, does not calls Rama "the perfect man" in his well known tale of Ramayana for no reason. For this story has been a legendary epic that many generations of the Hindu culture have been modeling their society after, for over two thousand years. It has been an influential teaching for children and scholars of all ages because of its simplicity and exemplary concepts and virtues of the Hindu people. From childhood most Indians learn the characters and incidents of this epic and they furnish the morals, ideals and wisdom of common life. This epic helps to bind.. more content... He handles the situation with remarkably patient and wise attitude and says to his stepmother, "I gladly obey father's command .., I would go even if you ordered it.". By doing this, he shows characteristics of great piety to his parents and the lack of desire to be a powerful and authoritative rich ruler, all while knowing that he is giving up his righteous turn to rule the kingdom since he is the oldest of the four sons of the king. Instead, he willingly goes off into exile – forest infested with evil spirits whom he battles with the power of good and defeats. As in most of the Eastern world, this example of respect being paid to elders, parents, authorities (no matter what one is commanded to do) is very important in one's 'faith'; and the fact that one successfully wards off evil, gives him/her the title of a cultural model hero, just as seen in Rama's case. Rama's casual attitude about going off into the forest for fourteen years also shows his asceticism – the will to give up his material, emotional and physical attachments. His peaceful and patient attitude towards his life is vivid due to his enduring wisdom. For he goes beyond the material and physical world

Essay on Indian Music

Indian Music The music of India is one of the oldest unspoken musical traditions in the world. The basis of for Indian music is "sangeet." Sangeet is a combination of three art forms: vocal music, instrumental music (Indian music). Indian music is base upon seven modes (scales). It is probably no coincidence that Greek music is also base upon seven modes. Furthermore, the Indian scales follow the same process of modulation (murchana) that was found in ancient Greek music. Since Greece is also Indo–European, this is another piece of evidence for the Indo–European connection (Dance and music of India). The vocal tradition is especially strong in Indian music. It is understood that the song is probably the most ancient form of.. more content... It is linked to the Sanskrit word "ranj" which means, "to colour" (Indian music). Therefore, rag may be thought of as an acoustic method of colouring the mind of the listener with an emotion. It is not a tune, melody, scale, mode, or any concept for which an English word exists. It is instead a combination of different characteristics. It is these characteristics, which define the rag. There must be the notes of the rag. They are called the swar (Indian music). There must also be a modal structure. This is called that in North Indian music and mela in carnatic music (Carnatic music). There is also the jati. Jati is the number of notes used in the rag. There must also be the ascending and descending structure. This is called arohana/avarohana. Another characteristic is that the various notes do not have the same level of significance. Some are important and others less so. The important notes are called vadi and samavadi (Indian music). There are often characteristic movements to the rag. This is called either pakad (Indian music). The Indian rhythm is known as tal. Tal means "clap". The tabla (Indian drum instrument) has replaced the clap in the performance, but the term still reflects the origin. The basic concepts of tal are tali, Khali, vibhag, matra, bol, theka, lay, sam, and avartan. Tali are a pattern of clapping. In addition to the claps, there are also a number of

The Discovery of India

The Discovery of India The Discovery of India was written by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, when he was imprisoned for five months in the Ahmednagar fort during the Indian independence movement. The book was published in 1946, a year before India gained independence. Many scholars who have published elaborate studies in the field of Indian history have called the book as a classic. Jawaharlal Nehru in his work has narrated in this book India's rich and complex past from the prehistoric times to the final years of colonial rule in India. Nehru begins his account from the beginning of the Indus Valley Civilization and outlines the country's geography before introducing the native tribes. The highlights of the book are.. more content... She wanted to play her own part in the national struggle. She did not want to hang on to Nehru. She wanted to justify herself to her own self as well as to the world. Nehru worried Nehru was blind to the feelings of Kamala and her desires. Another reason was Nehru was often away, either in jail or she will be ill. Kamala compared herself with Chitra in Tagore's play. When most of the men were in jail at the time of freedom struggle, the women in each house took charge of the struggle. This even surprised the British Government. Women of all class like women of the upper or middle classes, peasant women, working class women poured out in tens and thousands in defiance of government order and police lathi. Their organizational power surprised Nehru. The men in jail could hardly speak about them as their hearts were full and their eyes were dim with tears. Nehru's father also joined him in Naini prison. He was functioning as the leader of the civil disobedience movement. He was not in favour of women's participation in the freedom struggle. But he realized the temper of the struggle and did not discourage anyone including his family members. He was surprised to see the energy, courage and ability displayed by women all over the country. With the effort of Nehru's father, a 'Resolution of Remembrance' was passed on January 26, 1931. The police banned the meeting. Nehru's father organized the meeting from his sickbed. The

RHETORICAL ANALYSIS: FIRST DRAFT

"A TRYST WITH DESTINY": BY PANDIT JAWAHARLAL NEHRU

"A Tryst with Destiny" is regarded by many as one of the most prolific and well written political speeches of the 20th Century. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of Independent India. He addressed this iconic speech to the Indian Constituent Assembly on the eve of India's Independence Day at New Delhi, India. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was a highly revered personality in Indian politics. He had the rare ability to connect with the masses. This speech, too, was aimed to strike a chord with the common people. He aimed at inspiring the people to strive together towards a.. more content... In the initial parts of the speech he constantly talks about 'freedom', 'success' and 'new hope'. This sets up an inspirational tone to the speech. But he does not fail to mention that 'the achievement they celebrate' is actually the start of a new journey. He points out that the future is not an easy one but is filled with hurdles and obstacles. Incessant striving is necessary to overcome these challenges. He, further, outlines the major problems that India were facing: 'poverty', 'ignorance', 'disease' and 'lack of opportunity'. But he follows this with words of optimism. He draws reference from the ambitions of Mahatma Gandhi and pledges that their work will not be over till 'they wipe every tear from every eye'. This is how he sets up the structure of a major portion of his speech. Alternating between sad and optimistic tones. He goes back and forth between the struggles of the past and the opportunities of the bright future. He mentions that India has struggled for 'trackless centuries' for its freedom. But now, they have an opportunity for greater triumphs. He acknowledges the pain and suffering the people of this country had endured. But he assures that the future will be better. He knows that the sorrows and harsh memories of the past will 'still cling to us' but believes that these sorrows will give rise to new hopes. He also talks about the most dark and tragic aspects of their Independence. He remembers those 'unnamed volunteers and soldiers of

The Hindu religion and culture is a very complex subject. The Hindu religion combines rich ethnical and standard beliefs. Hindus have to be patient in their religion to achieve their peacefulness. Hindus are also known to be very friendly. Having such characteristics would greatly empower our whole society no matter what religion someone is from. My interviewee Tony Khanna, a fellow co–worker, took me to his temple he goes to worship, on a Sunday evening. He took me to the Sri Meenakshi Devasthanam located in Pearland, Texas. The first thing I noticed upon arrival at the temple is the beautiful architectural building design outside. I was in amazement of how beautiful the temple was. I had not seen something so beautiful in quite awhile. The temple is visible from a quite a distance away and has two stunning white towers. When coming up to the temple from the parking lot Tony indicated to me that the temple was established in 1977 and was a replica of a famous temple in India. There was a huge white gate we had to walk through to get to the main temple. Once inside I was greeted by many Hindu's that were quite pleasant and talkative towards this outsider that I was. Before the visit one of my questions to Tony was if Hindu's welcomed outsiders within their temples. He indicated that Hindu's are very open and that I would be welcomed. I was quite surprised for this to be so true. With in the confines of the temple there were many different kinds of symbols that I was not quite familiar with. A couple that I noted was a Diya, Om, and Swastika. There were
