Treats hypertension, pulmonary edema in heart failure, edema caused by impaired renal & hepatic function

Oral, IM, or IV use Oral may be given w/ food to prevent GI upset Give AM to prevent nocturia & sleep loss Administer IV push slowly to reduce risk of ototoxicity

Electrolyte imbalance, hypokalemia Severe fluid loss, dehydration Hypotension Ototoxicity Hyperglycemia Increased uric acid levels, gouty arthritis

Hypersensitivity, electrolyte imbalance, dehydration, hyperkalemia, anuria, impaired renal function, impaired hepatic function, DM, pregnancy, lactation

Digoxin toxicity, NSAIDs, neuromuscular blocking agents, lithium toxicity, amphotericin B, corticosteroids, aminoglycoside antibiotics increase risk for otoxocity

Monitor serum electrolyte levels Monitor for signs of hypokalemia If hypokalemia occurs, monitor for dysrythmias Use other ototoxic drugs with caution, monitor for hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo Monitor BP, vital signs Monitor glucose & uric acid levels regularly

Eat foods rich in potassium Report symptoms of electrolyte imbalance Report hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo Take as prescribed - do not skip or double up on doses Take in the morning to prevent sleep disturbance Monitor blood glucose carefully in DM Report onset of gout symptoms
