Development

Developmental psychology - The branch of psychology that studies the patterns of growth and change that occur throughout life. Visual Abilities - Sensation - ability to process to raw physical information ◦ Occurs primarily on the first year of life (i. conal migration) - 4 to 6 months after work - Development of sensory system allow six month olds to see with better acuity than newborns because of increased resolution - Conal migration ◦ The process of cones moving to the fovea in the first six months of life ◦ Cones move to the center to be able to see color - Visual abilities ◦ Perception - interpretation of raw physical energy - Occurs primarily in the first year of life - Face perception ◦ Perceptual development allows 9 month olds to see Faces like adults unlike newborns.

◦ Newborns do not see these two faces as different from one

another while 9 month olds and adults do What develops?

  • Memory abilities ◦ Recognition- identification of new object from the old one

  • Ability that emerges by the second month of life ◦ Recall- ability to re-enact or bring back to awareness a sequence of events

  • Shows rapid development from the first to second year of life

  • Temporal lobe- memory- hippocampus

  • Language abilities ◦ Comprehension- understanding the meaning of words

  • Ability that begins to emerge from 6-12 months of age ◦ Production- ability to speak and generate words

  • Shows rapid development from 1-3 years

The role of teratogens in prenatal development - Disease, drugs, and chemicals - Substances that have a negative impact on prenatal development Teratogens - Environmental agents such as a drug, chemical, virus or other factor that produce a birth defect

Drugs Alcohol in any quantity can have negative consequences on prenatal development

Children exposed to alcohol prenatally tend to have - Cognitive deficits - Learning difficulties - Heart damage - Retarded growth ◦ Usually occur 3 years ◦ Run the risk if you have 12 but 1 is ok... not recommended tho Dose-Dependent Relationship (impact of alcohol om prenatal development) - The more you drink, greater risk. Even moderate drinking causes the following after birth
