Etiology- cause of illness by a disorder.

Disorders

I. Anxiety Disorders

A. Phobias  simple, social agoraphobia

B. Panic disorder

C. Generalized Anxiety: Anxiety that is with a person all the time. They have a hard time sleeping. They have a feeling that never stops. They are in that fight or flight mode all the time. They feel as though the world is a dangerous place. Treatment: Medication

D. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Obsession: cannot stop thinking about something. Example: I can’t stop thinking about having germs. I am scared of them! Compulsive: psychical Example: They would wash their hands over 60 times a day to the point where they are more susceptible to germs.

Hoarding: A form of OCD because they can’t get rid of things. There is this obsession that they just want to collect everything for occasions. Everything from animals to garbage and it brings a great amount anxiety when you want to clean their house. Body Dysmorphic Disorder: She had an obsession over physical traits and she was aware of her traits and differences. This is external!

E. Post-Traumatic Disorder (PTSD): Life threatening event This is a form of anxiety disorder happens 6 months later after the event. This is most commonly found in war veterans. They are reminded of a traumatic event from hearing something. Example: A war veteran goes to a horse race and they hear the gun shot they are immediately thinking of the war and they get really bad anxiety. To the point where they don’t want to be there anymore.

II. Dissociative Disorders

A. Dissociative Amnesia: Is a person who does not a brain memory however, they do not

remember people or how to do something. This is a psychological trauma and they don’t check out.

Example: ‘Where did you live back in your childhood?” “I think it was a House” “Who are you?” “I can’t recall.”

B. Dissociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personality Disorder): Multiple personalities in one

person. Different personalities have its own characteristics. One person can have many identities.

Etiology: Childhood Trauma


III. Somatoform Disorder

A. Conversion Disorder: It’s this idea that these psychological symptoms/ stress cause physical symptoms. There isn’t a cause for these symptoms.

La Belle Indifference: They work around their symptoms. They don’t want to see a doctor because they think that everything is fine and okay.

B. Illness Anxiety Disorder: Hypochondriac. This is a person who is upset with illness. These are people that are always thinking that they have a problem with your body. Example: A normal human being has a freckly and thinks that its cancer. They go to the doctor and they ask the doctor if it was cancer and the doctor said no. They get relieved and leave. A person that has this disorder thinks that the doctor is wrong. They think that they are above what the doctors believe.


IV. Mood disorders

A. Bipolar Depression (Maniac Depression):

C. Major Depressive disorder (Suicide/Suicidal Ideation): feeling as though they are worthless and they are very guilty. Treatment: They are put under electric treatment. Where one would get an electric shock and it would trigger seizers. 38,000 people commit suicide. They don’t have good problem solving abilities.


V. Schizophrenia: Split from reality

Positive Symptoms: Inappropriate behavior Hallucinations Nonsense speech
