Working Safely with Animals

Hazards associated with animal work -injuries -hazardous agents exposure (chemicals, biological exponents, radiation) -allergen exposure -diseases

Allergies -inhalation and direct contact -shots can help

Zoonotic diseases -infectious disease transferred from animals to humans or humans to animals -bacterial diseases (Brucellosis, Campylobacteriosis, Psittacosis, Erysipeloid) -Parasitic -viral

Pay careful attention to the diseases Dr. Reimer spoke of at length (e. toxoplasmosis, Seoul virus, orf, rabies, Q fever, etc.)

Types of interactions among animals -space-oriented: personal space requirements -leadership and control: influence over other animals is reflected in behaviors that provide Leadership -facilitation: animals may be more productive in group environments -cooperation: collaboration may increase productivity in group settings -association: association among individuals develop routinely with pairing or grouping of Individuals -altruism: protecting others at the expense of one's-self -selfishness: risk of others for one’s-self

Distance -group distance: how far a group stays away from another -social distance: maximum space allowed between members of same group

Flight zone -How close an individual is to an animal before they start moving away

Individual distance -the distance an animal tries to maintain between itself and other animals

Behavioral indicators of pain -Abdominal pain: changes in posture -limb pain: use avoidance and licking -eye pain: tightly closed lids -ear pain: holding the head to one side or shaking the head -mouth pain: rubbing the mouth and unwillingness to eat
