Class Summary for 10/25/ In this week’s class, we reviewed and discussed ethics and social responsibility. Through the lecture, we got to learn a little about ethics and values in the business context. First, we talked about moral code of principles, and which implications it has on one’s conduct. We also discussed how ethics in the workplace plays a big role in forming organizational identity and how an ethical framework might be implemented by managers. Different approaches to social responsibility were also included in the lecture material, where the role of an organization was put in perspective relative to its’ stakeholders. In addition to all this, we also had group presentations, where we had real world examples of companies having to deal with ethical and social responsibility dilemmas. Lastly, all this was accompanied by a highly interesting article that laid out the psychology behind unethical behavior.

Let us start with dissecting the lecture. First, we talked about moral code of principles, which is a set of defined industry or organizational standards of “good/bad” or “right/wrong” in one’s conduct. In other words, the moral code of principles attempts to clearly define what conduct is good or rightful, as well as what conduct is bad or wrongful. However, these moral principles are not always applicable, and organizations are often put in

moral dilemmas that are in a gray zone. Add to that the fact that everyone has their own view on what is right or wrong, and you will find that ethical behavior is often hard to define.

After this, we discussed ethics in the workplace, which are the set of values the organization wants to uphold. In this process, one needs to consider what environmental-, organizational-, situational-, and personal norms the organization wants to have in their workplace. Together, these norms make up what the organization will view as ethical decision making and will be important in employees’ everyday life.

The lecture also touched upon the importance of whistleblowers. A whistleblower’s main purpose is to expose unethical behavior, and they are key to achieving a more ethical society. Whistleblowers are protected by law through the Whistleblower Protection Act (1989), which is in place to promote employees to go on record when they experience or discover unethical behavior in the organization which they are a part of. However, whistleblowers often face a dilemma – it is hard to "snitch" on the organization you work for, as you will most likely be fired and face dire consequences as an individual even though you are protected under law. The strict chain of command that a lot of organizations have in place might also hinder whistleblowing, as it forces you to always go to your supervisor first, who might choose to do nothing. Additionally, strong work group identities could lead to employees not daring to speak up.

An organization’s responsibility to their stakeholders was another important topic that was brought up. Stakeholders are people, groups, or other organizations holding a stake in an organization’s decisions. To be an ethical organization, the effect of an action on all these stakeholders needs to be considered before proceeding with doing it. Examples of how an organization might take on social responsibility are if they invest in renewable and sustainable energy sources or pay a fair wage even when they are not required to, for example

norms of the collective. Another regular gut-check you can use involves asking whether you would be comfortable telling a journalist or a judge about what is going on. If the answer to that question is no, maybe it is time to put your foot down and do your part to stop this unethical behavior.
