Class Summary for 10/25/2021
In this week’s class, we reviewed and discussed ethics and social responsibility.
Through the lecture, we got to learn a little about ethics and values in the business context.
First, we talked about moral code of principles, and which implications it has on one’s
conduct. We also discussed how ethics in the workplace plays a big role in forming
organizational identity and how an ethical framework might be implemented by managers.
Different approaches to social responsibility were also included in the lecture material, where
the role of an organization was put in perspective relative to its’ stakeholders. In addition to
all this, we also had group presentations, where we had real world examples of companies
having to deal with ethical and social responsibility dilemmas. Lastly, all this was
accompanied by a highly interesting article that laid out the psychology behind unethical
behavior.
Let us start with dissecting the lecture. First, we talked about moral code of
principles, which is a set of defined industry or organizational standards of “good/bad” or
“right/wrong” in one’s conduct. In other words, the moral code of principles attempts to
clearly define what conduct is good or rightful, as well as what conduct is bad or wrongful.
