Principles of Management

2021-10-

Class Summary for 10/04/ For this week’s class, focus was primarily directed towards Total Quality Management and its’ implications. Through the lecture, emphasis was put innovation and change and how such processes are implemented and look like. Some of the external factors that need to be considered when innovating and changing things within a business are economic-, legal-political-, technological-, and natural conditions. An assessment of how uncertain the current business environment is might also be of help when deciding the best way forward.

Some examples of how innovation and change to a business’ internal and external operations might look like were also provided. These examples included the display of changing from a process-based to a systematic approach or going from simple to complex processes. Further, an example of how a change in internal systems can result in a minimization of cost was provided. The example shown that a business, through changing from a process-based to a systematic approach, would be able to save up to $276,000 a year. The above-mentioned change, where a larger percentage of disputed claims would be solved by the person initially assigned to it rather than a department leader, would not only lessen costs, but also reduce time as well as improving quality, leading to higher customer value. This is of importance since this is what total quality management is all about. The tool is designed for customer-focused organizations that are in continual improvement and involves all employees of all aspects of the organization.

Ronnholmen 2 One company that has truly mastered total quality management is McDonald’s, who also happen to be the market leader within the fast-food industry. Coincidence? I think not. Through my peers’ presentations, I was able to get a better understanding of what goes into total quality management.

One of the presentations went over the part of McDonald’s implementation of total quality management that focuses on the employees. Through employee involvement, McDonald’s makes sure that they are at work on time, are neatly dressed, and are clean. The employees must make sure that the customers constantly receive safe and good-tasting food. In my opinion, McDonald’s main way of creating customer value is through time-efficiency, going together with the main driver of quality; that their employees deliver fast food with a smile. However, if service at the order desk is not courteous and efficient, McDonald’s believes that the created customer value due to the quick-service format will be lost. To avoid this problem detailed video tapes have been created, training every worker who has direct contact with customers. The tapes cover every aspect of dealing with the customers during his 15 seconds at the counter and are very meticulous. The success of these service methods cannot be questioned as they are reflected in the larger success of McDonald’s.

Moreover, we learnt that McDonald’s also implements total quality management through using benchmarking for continuous improvement. McDonald’s uses four different types of benchmarking: internal, competitive, industry, and process. Through these benchmarks, they can compare themselves with companies in the same markets and optimize their work processes to name two examples of their implementations.

My group presented how McDonald’s focuses on the customer. The main way they do so is through affordable, safe, and quality food, 24-hour service, the Ronald McDonald initiative, as well as an affordable delivery service.
