Module Eight Activity

 Discuss what it means to view our individual differences through a non- pathologizing lens. To ourselves and others through a pathological lens means to essentially reduce someone to their diagnosis, stigma, or affliction (Loggins, 2022). By doing this, it makes it easier to divide and separate individuals within a society between groups deemed as “normal” and “abnormal”. To view our individual differences through a non-pathologizing lens, we invite empathy and understanding to help us better know ourselves and each other. This hence brings forth less feelings of shame and feeling other-ed by society, just because a disease, affliction or malady someone may possess.

 In recent times, people have begun to adopt a non-clinical view of psychological conditions—as differences, not disorders. Discuss the costs and benefits of viewing psychological traits, symptoms, and conditions in this manner. There debate of whether or not psychological conditions should be classified as “differences” or disorders has individuals divided. The pros of having psychological traits, symptoms, and conditions viewed as a disorder can give an individual a better understanding overall of what is afflicting them (Wayne, 2022). They can also have access to more specialized treatments for the specific disorder they are dealing with, as well as their clinician having a better understanding on where to start treating and helping the individual (Wayne, 2022). However, some cons could consist of the individual feeling stigmatized for their condition (Wayne, 2022). Potential isolation from fear that others might label them as “dangerous” because of their diagnosis, as well as being misunderstood is another con of this as well (Wayne, 2022).

 Think of an abnormal behavior that may be viewed as a deficit or a weakness. Discuss how aspects of this behavior may be reframed and reapplied as a strength. Consistent and constant anxiousness can be easily seen as a deficit of weakness. Constantly feeling on edge, and being worried about things that may not even happen can potentially hinder an individual’s everyday life. However, it can also be looked at as a strength. Being in a slightly heightened awareness can serve to be beneficial, by giving the individual a preparedness to anything that could potentially cause them or others harm.
