 According to the findings of the Pew Research study, there are several potential costs and

benefits that result from frequent exposure to social media.

o Describe one psychological benefit of frequent social media use.

ANSWER: After reading this article one benefit that this research has names is

“pervasive awareness”. This is a benefit to frequent social media use because people

understand what’s going on with the people around them. This “pervasive awareness”

gives them more knowledge to understand how they can help themselves, and find

good resources to help them if they have seen someone on social media going through a

similar situation.

o Describe one psychological cost of frequent social media use.

ANSWER: One cost of frequent social media use is additional stress which can cause

anxiety and depression. This can happen to frequent social media users because they

just know so much about themselves and their families and close friends that all the

information because overwhelming and it just causes stress which leads to bad mental

health. Having so much information about your life and other people’s life can become

overwhelming, that it can hurt your psychological health, because you just have so

much on your plate.

 At the end of the study overview on page 3, the researchers discuss the notion of stress being

contagious.

o Describe what the research findings tell us about the link between our awareness of

other people’s stressful life events on social media and increases in our own stress.

The findings have told us that the link between our awareness of ourselves and other

people’s lives does typically affect women more than men. Though it effects women

more this research has told us that when we find our undesirable information about our

lives, but more importantly others our stress levels rise, and the only way we could

know about others lives is through social media. Knowing the information of others’

lives can affect us because we care about them and they are stuck in an undesirable

situation and we can’t help but we know and that information alone can be very

stressful.

 We often refer to our involvement in social media groups as being a member of a community.

o Describe how social media can promote the levels of education and awareness that

help to enhance well-being.

ANSWER: Social media can absolutely be informing and enhance well-being; we call

social media groups being a member because in certain instances it can be very

informative and help with your mental health. For example, during covid those who

lived alone could have joined face book group chats, communities to talk to people in

1

their same situation, this definitely would have enhanced wellbeing because those who

lived alone during covid were experiencing lots of mental health issues. Another great

community to join is new moms, they have so much on their plate maybe they are

having their first baby, I know many people who have joined mom face book

communities so they can all give advice on being prepared and how to go with the flow!

Social media can provide mental clarity and provide people a way to calm nerves when

going through life experiences you just have to make sure the communities you join are

safe and having a positive impact.

 Despite the positive intent of some social media influencers, their messages don’t always

promote empathy, diversity, and inclusion.

o If you were a social media influencer, describe how you would use social media to

enhance compassion and empathy for all people who struggle with psychological

disorders.

ANSWER: I am a big advocate when it comes to mental health, the last thing I want to be

is famous so I would never be an influencer. But if I was an influencer, I would create a

safe space by always being positive but to tell my followers that life is hard and social

media most of the time shows all the good in life. I would try to give advice on how to

deal with psychological orders in a positive way but to make sure that I am being real.

For example, anxiety is hard to deal with, many people always say just get up and do it,

but its not that easy. So, in my opinion I would tell people with anxiety if they are having

a bad anxiety day and want to lay in bed all day that’s okay sometimes our bodies need

time to recover, but if you cannot lay in bed do the bare minimum do what you have to

do and then find the time to relax and just calm your mind and do what your body and

mind needs (rest and relaxation).
