PSY 215 Module Two Milestone Template

To complete this milestone, review the Pew Research article “Social Media and the Cost of Caring,” linked in this assignment in your course. As you weigh the costs and benefits of frequent exposure to social media, respond to each of the rubric criteria with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your position with credible sources when appropriate. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. - According to the findings of the Pew Research study, there are several potential costs and benefits that result from frequent exposure to social media. o Describe one psychological benefit of frequent social media use. - one benefit of social media use is the stigma on mental illness. Some people feel the best way to accept themselves is to share it with others and connect with people who have the same struggles, this can make them feel seen and validated; that they are not alone. Even for those who do not choose to publicly share, they may still find a community of people in the same situation. o Describe one psychological cost of frequent social media use. - one cost of social media is low self-esteem. Online, people only show the best parts of their lives, may celebrities photoshop themselves to look “perfect.” There is a societal stereotype that is the “perfect” man or women, and this is portrayed all over the media, if you do not look a certain way then you are unhealthy. This leads people to compare themselves to these fake pictures online, making them not feel worth enough and lowering their self-esteem. - At the end of the study overview on page 3, the researchers discuss the notion of stress being contagious. o Describe what the research findings tell us about the link between our awareness of other people’s stressful life events on social media and increases in our own stress. - The findings found in this research show that being aware of others lives and their stressful events can cause a spike in one’s personal stress levels. A quote I found that best describes this is “The ‘cost of caring’ associated with awareness of others people’s stressful events may be a negative consequence of social media use because social media may make users more aware of the struggles of those in their network”(Hampton et. al. 2015). Social media gives us such easy access to our peers lives now and makes it much easier to connect but at the same time being much more aware of these life events may cause one more stress due to worrying about the people they care about. - We often refer to our involvement in social media groups as being a member of a community. o Describe how social media can promote the levels of education and awareness that help to enhance well-being.

Social media has become easily accessible in many parts of the world now by people of all ages. It allows people to connect with others from any part of the world who have similar interests, ideas can be easily spread from one country to another in a click of a button. It allows for educational videos to be posted online and viewed by millions of people. Important news can be spread in an instant to bring awareness to certain situations. It allows for information to be shared faster than it ever has before.

  • Despite the positive intent of some social media influencers, their messages don’t always promote empathy, diversity, and inclusion. o If you were a social media influencer, describe how you would use social media to enhance compassion and empathy for all people who struggle with psychological disorders. If I were a social media influencer I would talk about my own personal struggles with mental health and share other stories. My goal would be to make sure nobody feels alone in what they are going through, I would want to create a safe and supportive community where people can freely share their struggles with others and be heard instead of belittled. I would let people ask any questions they want judgement free and offer resources if needed. I would want to be a safe place that people go to for advice, support, community, and help.
