PSY 215 Project One Template Use the following article to support you in writing your blog post: Tips for Writing Popular Blog Posts. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Part One Use this Project One Template to complete your blog post. You will first review the various psychological disorders that you’ve learned about in the course and select 3 disorders to focus on for this assignment. Using a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences per bullet for each psychological disorder, respond to each of the rubric criteria below to structure your blog post. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Blog post headline: [Miracle mind] Three selected disorders: [Anxiety] [obsessive compulsive disorder ] [depresion]

  • In your own words, identify and describe the main diagnostic features of each of the disorders selected. Anxiety is characterized by excessive worry, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, muscle tension, and sleep disturbances. It often involves irrational fears and a heightened sense of threat, impacting daily functioning. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder can be identified by distressing obsessions (persistent thoughts, images) and compulsions (repetitive behaviors or mental acts) aimed at reducing anxiety. These behaviors can interfere with daily function. Depression is characterized by persistent low mood, diminished interest or pleasure, sleep loss, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide. Consider biomedical factors: Describe what it means to characterize the disorders as “diseases of the nervous system and the body.” Portraying anxiety as a disease underscores the influence of physiological and neurobiological factors, recognizing differences in neural function and bodily responses as key contributors to anxiety disorders. Characterizing OCD as a disease emphasizes the biomedical perspective, highlighting the role of biological factors. Instead OCD should be highlighted by abnormalities in the nervous system, particularly involving neurotransmitters like serotonin, which are implicated.

Labeling depression as a disease discredits a biomedical approach, highlighting disturbances in neurotransmitters, neural pathways, and hormonal systems. Consider clinical factors: Describe the similarities between the disorders selected. In what ways might these similarities impact diagnosis and treatment? Anxiety, OCD, and depression share distress and concentration issues, complicating diagnosis. Treatment addresses common features but must be tailored for each disorder. Understanding their interplay is vital for accurate diagnosis and effective care. Consider historical factors: Describe the ways deinstitutionalization has impacted patient rights, levels of care, and access to treatment of the disorders over time. moving from mental institutions to community care, changed how anxiety, depression, and OCD are treated. It improved patient rights but created challenges like limited support and specialized care. Access to treatment has been affected over time, impacting the quality of care for these conditions. Consider sociocultural factors: Describe the social and cultural changes that have caused shifts in the public’s perception of the disorders over time. Societal and cultural shifts over time have altered public perceptions of anxiety, depression, and OCD. Growing awareness and stigmatization efforts have fostered open discussions, but stereotypes and cultural norms still influence how these conditions are viewed and supported in the community. Part Two For Part Two, choose 1 disorder from the 3 you discussed in Part One. Respond to each of the three questions in a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate and address the rubric criteria. One selected disorder: [OCD] Consider the mind-body connection: Describe whether a discernible bidirectional relationship exists between the disorder and physical illness. If so, explain. The relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder and physical illness appears bidirectional. Chronic stress from OCD may contribute to physical health problems, as stress impacts the immune systems. Conversely, certain physical conditions, such as autoimmune disorders, may trigger OCD symptoms due to the interplay between mental and physical well-being. The mind-body connection in OCD suggests a reciprocal influence, where mental health impacts physical health, and vice versa.
