My sources are three articles I found to be relevant to my topic. First is “Short and Long- term use of ADHD medication in children”. Second is “Five reasons you should not medicate

your child with ADHD”. Lastly, “Pros and Cons of ADHD Medication”. I hope to show that medication should not be the first and only choice a parent has.

First source seems to be arguing that there can be good and bad sides to medicating your child. That the child may need not only medication but also therapy to control the disorder.

This source is using the following evidence to support the argument. First it states that medication isn’t the only option parents have. It goes on to tell you the side effects of different medications and finally it states that as your child grows their medication may not work as well and you may think they are outgrowing ADHD.

Finally, a counter argument could be that short term use is beneficial and long-term use does not affect everyone the same.

Second source seems to be arguing that there are multiple reasons not to medicate your child. The behavioral therapies are the best way to go when dealing with a child with ADHD.

This source is using the following evidence to support the argument. That because our whole mental health system has broken down and medication is often the first and only treatment offered, a parents first step really should be meeting with a psychologist, who can offer parents support and obtain resources.

Finally, a counter argument could be that there are too many children on medication as it is and that behavioral therapy does not work. That it is up to the parents to correct the behavior.

Third source seems to be arguing that even though medication can help with ADHD it is not a cure-all.
