For quite sometime now, the United States has been dealing with an opioid crisis. As many as 50,000 people have lost their lives in 2019 alone to an opioid related overdose. The opioids could range from pain relievers, to heroin, and even synthetic opioids, like fentanyl. In order to be able to combat this crisis, we must first learn about this crisis. The United States is in the depths of an opioid crisis. The way to combat this crisis is to learn the history of addiction, what law enforcement is doing to stop this epidemic, and how rehabilitation and treatment work to keep an addict from relapsing. The history of addiction goes all the way back to the 1800s, with most of the addictive drugs being created over in Europe. In 1803, German Chemist Fredrick

Opioid Surge was put together with the goal of “reducing the supply of synthetic opioids in 10 high impact areas and identifying wholesale distribution networks and international and domestic suppliers” (The United States Department of Justice, 2020). By cutting down the suppliers of these synthetic opioids stops them from coming in and being distributed within the United States. There are different treatment and rehabilitation options readily available to those suffering with addiction. Initially a level of treatment needs to be determined, starting with detox, inpatient, outpatient, or medication assisted treatment. From treatment addict would go into an Active Recovery program ranging from 12 step programs, faith and religion, and sober living homes. Some individuals chose to do a treatment called Medication Assisted Treatment. This treatment uses medications along with counseling and behavioral therapies to help assist them in detoxing from their drug of choice (Medication Assisted Treatment, n). This treatment is approved by the Food and Drug Administration. When pursuing active recovery an individual may chose a 12 step program, such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. Alcoholics Anonymous uses the “Big Book” as guiding literature along with 164 pages illustrating all the steps that are outlined in the chapters. Whereas Narcotics Anonymous uses a

workbook as well as “Basic Text” with questions to be answered by the addict about each step (Is there a Difference between AA and NA?, 2020). Each program is used along with inpatient or out patient treatment. Many people would disagree that there is active steps being taken to fight the opioid crisis. Especially with overdoses that continue to happen on a daily basis. The question arises is law enforcement doing enough to help stop the sale of painkillers, heroin, and fentanyl in the streets. With the constant trafficking at our borders, and not knowing what is coming and when makes it difficult to know when the crisis will be under control. There is constant and active steps being taken to fight this crisis. Customs and Border Patrol are seizing all types of drugs on a daily basis at our borders to stop the from coming into the United States. The opioid crisis will continue to be an issue, as long as there is a way to get them. The best way to combat that is the continuous education of what the drugs are, where they are coming from, and how we can stop them from coming to the United States. The more educated we become the easier it will be to fight this opioid crisis. Until then it will be a continuous fight to keep the opioids off the streets and overdoses down.
