Antigone Affirmation The play was out bringing when I watched rather than reading the script. As it brought the story to life. Antigone play shows feminist angle. This play had an emotional impact where it showed the major conflict between Antigone and Creon. It showed Antigone free action taken by herself who was raised up alone and decided to die alone. Antigone in the play shows the tragic heroine role where it is difficult to decide what she did make her brave or rebellious. Watching the play I felt she was withdrawn from her life where she refuses to understand people around her. One positive side I liked about her that being young rising up alone to fight for her life rights with willpower and bravery. Looking at Creon’s character his role was more sensible and practical where his only concern was social and political laws. Even I felt that what he was doing for Antigone was all good by saving her from dying by going against his laws. As it showed how much he was concerned about her.

Each actor did excellent work by portraying their characters in the way it is given in the script. Watching the play I got connected with all the characters. The best parts were when the chorus narrated the story from start till end it added an immense element to the play. The second part I liked was romantic element shown between Antigone and Haemon where he loved her and wanted to marry her but she was ready to leave him. But still, all this Haemon refuses to give up and begs to his dad for Antigone’s life. Even though he was refused he followed death with Antigone this showed his true love for her. All actors totally went in their characters to out bring the best out of it. The body talk and expression was perfect which made play more interesting to watch. All parts were brought out from the chorus introducing the characters till the calling of the end of Antigone was systematically and perfectly done.

`I really like the director’s concept of putting up this amazing play. From lighting, background costumes, staging, and music made it feel like I am in the modern version of Antigone play. The best thing was the Chorus where it was played by three people in the show. According to the script, it’s played by one. Using three people it added lot affect to the play it made the play look complete. The chorus made comments and acted out the story which also framed the play by introducing all the characters and showing their action during the play. Even the best part was when the chorus was inside Creon’s brain telling him to do by doing what is right. This was a good way of telling out the story in a totally new way. I also liked the comedy element in a few scenes which made the play look bit lively. The ending of the play by saying thank you was done in a very magnificent way by getting all characters one by one on stage. Even after the play ended the audience was still upset by Antigone’s decision,

The stage design was designed in such a way that made me believe I was in the past and modern era. It had both elements which made the stage look better. Center staging was a better option for viewing the play has it gave a clear view of the play to the audience. The golden gates were designed in such a way that was painted in golden color which even showed the setup of a rich family. It was also used to show the death of Antigone at the end by showing the doors closing. The dry leafs pit in the middle of the stage was designed in such a way that it could be used in play has an extra element of staging. I liked that stage design it had a modern element which made the play look more presentable to the present world.

The sound and lights added another level of expression to the play. I liked the part when the chorus was delivering their dialogues the sound used was echo which sounded like the god is speaking to all. This was a good way of showing sound can be used this way for the chorus. The lightning used for the play was using warm colors which showed an ancient era of Greek. Overall everything was perfectly timed which made the play looked more practical. The usage of costumes and props were modern. Working as wardrobe assistant I understood how costumes were selected for each character role as it was designed and kept modern. Even tiny props during the play mattered as it covered all small details that made the play look completed.

Overall the play was well synchronized with all the important elements needed. The play looked more modern enough to catch audience attention by liking it. As it gave the feeling of the ancient Greek era with a bit of modernization.

Cultural and Historical Context of Drama to Production This play has talked about how Antigone was being rebelling enough to fight for what is right. In today’s world, society needs women to stand up from all pain and oppression and raise their voices as now it can be heard. The meaning of this play was to show the tension between fate and action. It was good to see how young woman like Antigone could fight for herself with strong willpower. The characters have well portrayed their traits by showing their importance of life. For Antigone, it was her duty to bury her brother has she felt it was against morality to leave her brother’s body unburied. This made her fight for what she did wrong and decided to die. If she wouldn’t have died then there won’t be the point of calling her antagonist. According to me, the antagonist is the someone who has the power to make changes for what’s right. Looking at this play I would say Antigone shouldn’t have killed herself as there where people in life who cared about her more than herself. Watching the reaction of the audience I could say more people were agreed that supported Creon’s side has it was noticed. I felt the play had a lot to show the importance of how women in society can be strong enough to face her fears. Before it used to be very difficult for women to raise her voice through the play is written by a Greek playwright Sophocles around 441 B it was a good way of showing Antigone strong woman.

I felt this play was worth doing at this time as it gave an understanding of how important for women to raise her voice in today’s world without any fear. Even in today’s world women aren’t given their freedom where they are being stopped from doing things what they love to do and make decisions for them. This play was reviewing the history and connecting to the modern world with its production elements. The play well communicated to me as well to the audience as I could see their emotions after the play there where shock and surprises during the play. Lastly, it gave me to see all the aspects of life in a different way and fight for what is right for which make me confident and brave.
