ANTIGONE

Response paper. (4-6 pages)

Due: should be in a D2L dropbox by 11:30 P. on 12/12/

I. AFFIRMATION (1-2 pages)

Positive comments that are NOT “this is the greatest thing I have ever seen.”

These comments should be concrete and contain a description of specific moments of the performance that affected you the most and stuck in your mind. Your comments should be about:

1 actors’ work 2’s concept 3 of design

Even if the performance was a complete disaster from your point of view, you are still capable of finding a few small nuances that you might honestly appreciate.

II. OPINION (1-2 pages)

Your opinion about the play that are NOT “I liked it” or “I hated it.”

Your opinion should be clearly articulated and supported with concrete examples from the performance.

III. APPLY CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL

CONTEXT OF DRAMA TO PRODUCTION (1-

pages)

The original play Antigone was written by a Greek playwright Sophocles around 441 B. Jean Anouilh wrote his version of the play in Nazi-occupied Paris. And you have just watched a 21st century American performance of Antigone. How had the meaning of the play, the interpretation of the characters, and the message for the audience been changed by the historical context? Can you explain why at different times theatre artists chose to bring this particular work into being? What does this play have to say to YOU today?
