The Revolutionists

Affirmation

I really loved to watch the play than reading the script. As the play was emotionally connecting with each of the characters. This play had all elements from comedy to sadness where it had more of politics in it. As it was perfect badass women play which promoted feminism. This play took me too enlightening and invigorating journey where it had a contemporary twist for each character which made the play brought out more when it was visually shown. This play tried telling the stories of women how they were treated in past. I think Gunderson did a good part by selecting different background women where Olympe was a passionate famous playwright, Corday was righteous girl referred assassin, and Antoinette was the queen of France and lastly Marianne free woman from Paris. Bringing out these characters from different backgrounds was the most interesting part I liked for this play.

Each character pretty much did excellent work by portraying their characters in the way it is given in the script. Watching this play I got connected emotionally with all characters. Especially the best part from the play I liked the most was when all characters were telling their story in corners which brought their emotions that how much they had to go through in their lives. However, all the characters had a different aspect of being executed which was brought out it is very systematic and perfectly timed way. All the actors had out bringing expression and body talk was perfect which made play more interesting to watch. From the entering of Olympe, introducing other characters till her death was thriller and comedy ride which I enjoyed watching.

I really like the director’s concept of putting up this astonishing play. From costumes, staging, lighting and background music made it feel like I am in the French revolution era. In the play adding her song which was sang by all the characters after they died was beautifully shown. The song was brought out in a very good way as. It was stuck in my head after the play. When it comes to the song it had a lot of meanings to it by telling what reputation women had in society. Humor In play was fascinating by mentioning of writing a musical play as it gave a dramatic and musical feeling. Furthermore, even Olympe wanted to do musical play as she mentions it many times in the play. The ending of the play by saying thank you was done in a very magnificent way. As the ending pretty much involved connecting to the audience by understanding their responses to the play.

The stage design included entrances on each corner which gave the feeling of being inside the play and experiencing the scenes with actors. Viewing the play from all different angles and having center staging was a good option to consider for this play. I also liked the concept of using a hall by naming it “Hall of legends” before entering the theatre. It was an interesting way to show powerful strong women how they have fought for their rights and freedom in the past and still being remembered for their brave commitments and sacrifices. Moreover, the coolest thing was placing guillotine on all four corners. First I thought it was just the cardboard design but when Charlotte was getting executed and that noise of guillotine gave me goose bumps as I wasn’t expecting that coming. Moreover, the execution was perfectly timed even the sound, lights, character’s expression made it more realistic and I felt that I was part of the play.

The sound and lights added another level of expression to the play. As it showed all the emotional expression of each character in a more dramatic way. Especially when it comes to execution part the crowd noises used as background audio made seem like I was being surrounded in a group of people. Even lights used for execution like a white light had the spotlight for a person to speak and red light showing the person was dead. Everything was perfectly timed for which made play more realistic.

Costumes and props captured the period of characters. I preferably like Marie’s costume it made the character so elegant not only that the way her hair was tied it made her look royal enough which is shown and described in pictures of her. All the characters costumes were designed to perfect enough to show fashion of France in past. Looking at the use props all tiny little detailed made the play look completed. For instance, Marie playing with ribbons, showing her jewelry, sunglasses, even Olympus's feathered pen all these tiny props created a huge difference in play. The most interesting thing I liked that the director thought of using an animal face mask for fraternity as it showed how monster and cruel men used to be in past. Even on the stage suit box drawn my attention, but when it was used it surprised me that even this props were been used.

Overall I liked the play it was shuttle which had humor and contemporary twist to it. The whole play was well synchronized with all the important elements needed in play. As all facts were kept in mind and showcased the play looked more realistic enough to capture audience attention by liking it. It gave me the feeling of being in the French revolution era.

I felt this play was worth doing at this time as it gave an understanding how to modern world about the French revolution. It moreover showed how women how much struggle and scarifies they have done in past to gain their rights and freedom. But even in today’s world women aren’t given their freedom in few cases where they are being stopped from doing things. It also shows about the rich and poor gap, racism, sexism the only difference between us and the play is year and continent. Doing this play was reviewing the history and connecting to the modern world for the answers. I felt the production was worth artist and audience time and effort as all the elements in the play was done perfectly and it was worth watching it. This play helps all of us to the understand how important is to remove gender biases from a society which still goes where women are being stopped from achieving their freedom, rights, and success. The play well communicated to me as well to the audience as I could see their emotions after the play where few were in shock and surprised with things in the play. Lastly, it gave me to see all the aspects of life in a different way and fight for what is mine if it’s not given raise voice just like the great legends did it
