Have you ever contemplated suicide? The TV show I have chosen is the 13th episode of the second season of Thirteen Reasons Why, which is an original tv-series of Netflix developed by Brian Yorkey. The executive producer of this show is Selena Gomez. This show is mainly about how a deceased girl records tapes of her telling thirteen reasons why she killed herself. This article shows how concepts can be related to the tv-series by observing and implying them. For this show, the concepts that I found connecting were self-esteem, social situation, intimacy, and values. Throughout the episode, all these concepts constantly apply.

In Thirteen Reasons Why shows start where each person listens to Hannah’s (who is played by Katherine Langford) voice where she tells thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay (played by Dylan Minnette) plays the closest friend of Hannah in this show. In season two Episode 13 it mainly shows how Clay, Tyler, and Bryce are main roles brought out here. Mainly shows about Tyler being assaulted and then planning to open fire in his school. The next it shows how everyone is gathered to honor Hannah. This tv-series mainly deals with bullying, stereotypes, depression, anxiety etc. which is found in teenagers.

The first concept brought out was “self-esteem”. Self- esteem according to Verderber et. all is “the positive or negative evaluation we attach ... to our perception of our competencies and personality traits” (Verderber et al. 27). Self-esteem shows up in the episode in the form of bullying and its consequences. The bullying is done to Tyler by a character named Montgomery.

Monty was charged for bullying Clay and the others. Monty was loyal to Bryce but at the end, Bryce tells him to move on and forget it. This rejection doesn’t go well for Monty and he ends up taking out on Tyler. Tyler was already going to a counselor as he was not doing well with dealing with his emotions. Monty ends up taking out their anger out of baseball cancellation on Tyler where he was brutally beaten up, it was painful to watch even a boy can be assaulted. This shows how Tyler’s self-esteem was being destroyed by Monty and his friends due to bullying.

The second concept brought out was a “social situation”. The social situation is defined by Verderber et. all as “the nature of the relationship that already exists between the participants” (Verderber et al. 6). This links to 13 Reasons Why’s Season 2 Episode 13. This comes to light when Clay, the main character, talks down Tyler, who has brought a gun to the school dance to open fire in retaliation of the wrong done to him. After the trauma he has gone by Monty he plans to open fire. As soon as Clay finds about it he gathers others and tells them to lock doors and keep everyone safe. Even having that care about Tyler, he tells everyone not to call the police. This shows how much Clay wanted to save Tyler thought he couldn’t save Hannah. In the end, he is able to stop Tyler from gun shooting his fellow classmates. I think Clay shouldn’t have to stop Tyler because he wasn’t in the right state of mind and would have ended up shooting him. But looking from another side he did it to save his friend from getting into bigger problems.

The third concept brought out was “intimacy”. Intimacy according to Verderber et. “is the degree of emotional closeness in a relationship” (Verderber et al. 14). In this show Hannah and Clay had a unique relationship between them, In the start, they had a friendship relation between them but soon after Hannah dies Clay understands his love for her. In this episode, clay speaks for Hannah’s honor where he talks about how much he loves her, but she is not around him anymore. Then he hopes that’s rest in peace wherever she goes and feels safe in the way she
