Anzia Yezierska
As a writer, Anzia Yezierska was very feministic and highlighted the struggles of being a
Jewish immigrant in America. A lot of her work contains female protagonists, and explores the
struggle against the patriarchy, poverty and restrictive Jewish practice (Horowitz). She highlights
assimilation throughout her work and how immigrant daughters struggle with Jewish
Womanhood whilst trying to merge in American societal conventions.
Anzia’s personal experiences as a young Jewish woman definitely seep into the pages she
writes, as “her brothers were encouraged in their educations, Anzia was sent to work in a series
of sweatshops” (Austerlitz). Where her brothers were able to get an education, Anzia was sent
out to work, similar to Sara in her novel “Bread Givers”, as there was a “cultural climate that did
not legitimate the educational aspirations of girls” (Austerlitz).
