Perspectives in Natural Sciences

December 9, 2023

Part 1: Natural Science Topic Exploration

1. Describe the main idea discussed in your chosen news story.

*There is a recent research study from UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanology

that provides important new information. The new information details that there is extra

ice loss near the meltwater beneath the Antarctica glaciers. Recent findings can impact

the future of specific locations such as coastal regions.

2. Explain your prior and desired knowledge regarding the main idea in your news

story.

*I do know that the glaciers of Antarctica have been melting for quite some time, but the

new study shows that it is getting worse. With the glaciers melting it is affecting

everyone, including both humans and animals. Animals, such as polar bears have been

living in unhabitual conditions and are dying off. The sea level has been quite a concern

for a while as well as the temperatures becoming warmer than they should be in bodies of

water such as oceans, lakes, and rivers. I would like to understand what other animals

near or in the ocean are being affected by the negative occurrences and what can be done.

What is the prediction for the glaciers melting completely? Are there ideas to attempt to

slow or stop this such as reducing the amount of greenhouse gases? I often wonder if

3. Explain how your personal beliefs, assumptions, and values influenced how you

approached writing your hypothesis.

a. I have a lot of interest already in global warming, so when I selected my news

article, I was eager to learn more information. My personal beliefs showed

through as I was writing because I care a lot about our planet and what is

happening to it. I already had presumed that something bad was happening to

our planet because I already looked at articles about global warming before

college. I often assume that global warming is not getting better but worse

because of how it has been going for the last several years. Global warming is

something I value a lot because I want to make a difference. I took extra time

to write my work regarding global warming because I believe it matters to

study what is happening to our planet and what we can do to help.

Part 3: Major Developments in the Natural Sciences

In this section, you will research a significant advancement, discovery, or event that has affected

how scientists research your topic. You will also explore the interrelationship between science

and ethics.

1. Describe one major development in the natural sciences that has impacted how your

topic was or may be studied.

a. Utilizing ice cores to determine weather years ago in the past. Discovered in

the 1960s roughly.

2. Describe the contributions of a scientist (or group of scientists) who was involved in

the major development relevant to your topic.

a. Camp Century, Greenland, and Byrd Station, Antarctica were the first places

used to do ice cores (Belknap, n.). This discovery of ice cores allowed

scientists to see what the weather was like years ago. Such as various weather

like wind, dust storms, or temperature. This great technology allowed us to

discover 300 major eruptions in the last 9,000 years (Belknap, n.). This

information can tell us a lot about the Earth many years ago and specific

details, which can help us learn more about global warming. Learning what

our planet was like many years ago can help us understand more about our

planet and what we can do to help global warming. We can see if our planet is

warming up and how many degrees its rising specifically. This allows us to

keep track of our temperature and how bad global warming is becoming. We

could see what areas are being more impacted than others. We can also see if

natural disasters such as hurricanes or floods occurred. This tells us a timeline

of events to natural disasters. I believe the scientists who discovered this

wanted to help the planet and see what has happened in the past to help us. I

am sure their idea was to also keep track of our weather and to be able to

compare.

wrong with our dog. We would apply first aid to the wound and see what

happened. We could utilize first aid and then wait for a vet to assist with the

next care needed. If our cousin keeps coughing and sneezing, this could be a

symptom of COVID. We could offer them to take a COVID test to determine

if it is COVID. This will help her learn to treat it better if it determines she

does have it. This allows you to assist people in the steps they should take in

the scientific approach.

2. Articulate how being a more scientifically informed citizen may affect your

relationship with your community.

A. Being scientifically informed can help your community in various ways. You could help

someone you know such as family members, coworkers, friends, or a neighbor. By

understanding something in depth in a scientific approach you could help someone understand

something better. You could teach those around you by sharing new concepts or theories. Being

scientifically aware could help a new parent you know or a neighbor learning to garden. When

we understand better, we can teach those around us, and we can further our education or

others. Being informed on a scientific approach is also good for the environment because we

can spread tips on how to go green. There are many benefits to being scientifically aware. We

can do so much for the world by spreading useful information and tips. When you look at it,

there are many opportunities to help the world through new information with each other. By

learning through each other we can also make an impact on our planet. Climate change is real,

and we should be aware of this. We should use this information to help climate change by

reducing our carbon footprint. We could walk instead of drive or use less water in our house.

We should always recycle plastic, bottles, or odd things like batteries. Reusing items can allow us

to get more use out of it before throwing it out. In the video “The Earth Is Full” the person

mentions that we can act for our planet or be afraid. We can choose to help and make a

difference with our planet by doing the stuff we need so all of us can live here happily. To live

here happily we have to find a way to be scientifically informed and do what is right.

3. Discuss how being a more scientifically informed citizen may help you understand

global contemporary issues.

A. If more of us were scientifically literate, we could get so much more work

accomplished. By being scientifically aware we have a much clearer

understanding and a grasp on global contemporary issues. As a population in

America, we could work on so many more issues like global warming and could

have a closer look at it. Issues like these could be resolved much quicker if

everyone were scientifically literate because we could come to an

understanding of contemporary issues.
