Interviews with the Experts: Assignment Sheet

The Interviews with the Experts Videos are intended to extend your understanding of the material in the textbook by giving you a behind-the-scenes look at aspects of personality and its application by some of the leaders in the field. There are no right or wrong answers, but your grade will be based on the nature, quality, and relevance of your responses.

  1. Imagine that you are writing a brief description of this video for people who are considering watching it. How would you characterize or summarize it (in 50-75 words).

    • Dr. Burger, a social psychologist, describes his experience with the sub-discipline of Personality and how that came to influence the writing of his textbook “Personality”. Dr. Burger talks about the changes within the field of psychology he has experienced as he continues to write new editions of his textbooks, and also discusses where he believes the field of Personality will go next.
  2. Identify any three “take-aways” that you got from this video. These could be any points that it made, thoughts that it sparked, or issues or applications that it discussed.

Take-Away #1: Cognitive psychology and social psychology is merging to a point that it is becoming hard to keep the two approaches separate.

Take-Away #2: Personality is a good taste of a wide spectrum of different psychology disciplines due to this specialization having a lot of different approaches within it.

Take-Away #3: As psychology continues to grow, different approaches will go in and out of influence and popularity, however, that does not mean those approaches are no longer important.

  1. Imagine that you are writing a review of this video that summarizes your evaluation of it. Please indicate what you liked BEST and LEAST about the video and give it a rating (based on a 5-star system). Note that the evaluation of your response is based on your identifying the things you liked BEST and LEAST, and your assignment of rating, and NOT the number stars you give it or whether you liked or disliked the video. Your evaluations will be helpful in relation to encouraging you to reflect more deeply on the video and provide us with feedback that can be useful in relation to the value of the video’s use in the future. Be sure to identify: A) What I liked Best: - I liked the conversation about where psychology is going. Hearing from an expert about the future of psychology was really interesting to hear, especially as someone who is very interested in the field. Thinking about the fact that we will most likely see more biological limits being talked about psychology is really interesting. B) What I liked Least (or would like to have heard more about):
  • What I liked the least about the video wasn’t necessarily part of the video. I didn’t like that they didn’t discuss more of Dr. Burger’s career within psychology. Although I do believe his textbook, and the different changes that are occurring in each edition, was interesting, I believe his research was very intriguing and would have liked to hear more about that. C) My overall rating: (1 to 5 stars): 4 Stars
