Interviews with the Experts: Assignment Sheet

The Interviews with the Experts Videos are intended to extend your understanding of the material in the textbook by giving you a behind-the-scenes look at aspects of personality and its application by some of the leaders in the field. There are no right or wrong answers, but your grade will be based on the nature, quality, and relevance of your responses.

  1. Imagine that you are writing a brief description of this video for people who are considering watching it. How would you characterize or summarize it (in 50-75 words).

Dr. Neimeyer follows a lot of George Kelly’s theories, especially the “Personal Construct Theory”. Kelly stated that cognition is just a human construct. He basically believes that we put value on things and give them purpose. Everyone perceives things differently based by our own schema. Dr. Neimeyer listened to 75 hours of psychotherapy sessions Kelly had with a patient of his. Dr. Neimeyer noticed in these sessions that people around the patient had a lot of influence on them and would draw comparisons to these people to help the patient come up with their own construct.

  1. Identify any three “take-aways” that you got from this video. These could be any points that it made, thoughts that it sparked, or issues or applications that it discussed.

Take-Away #1: Construct therapy is helping a patient to understand why they do and think the things they do and this is to be praised instead of demonized as we do these things for some higher reason or good.

Take-Away #2: Whenever we feel betrayal, loved ones etc, our core constructs change.

Take-Away #3: There is no wrong or right way of grieving, but we can change our construct and give meaning to these outcomes.

  1. Imagine that you are writing a review of this video that summarizes your evaluation of it. Please indicate what you liked BEST and LEAST about the video and give it a rating (based on a 5-star system). Note that the evaluation of your response is based on your identifying the things you liked BEST and LEAST, and your assignment of rating, and NOT the number stars you give it or whether you liked or disliked the video. Your evaluations will be helpful in relation to encouraging you to reflect more deeply on the video, and provide us with feedback that can be useful in relation to the value of the video’s use in the future. Be sure to identify:

A). What I liked Best:

I loved that there was a lot of talk about cognitive processes. Kelly’s approach brings in emotions as many other theories don’t mention emotions as playing a part in the development of our personalities. Also, Kelly’s psychotherapy structures almost follow a psychological approach

as we are trying to find the purpose and meaning of our actions and thoughts.

B). What I liked Least (or would like to have heard more about): Kelly talks so much about pain being a part of our lives but it almost sounds like he’s saying that through pain comes freedom and I agree but also don’t agree. Pain does affect us but we don’t need to go through pain and suffering to basically achieve enlightenment.

C). My overall rating: (1 to 5 stars): 4
