Perspectives on Personality: Self-Schemas in Action
This exercise is designed to illustrate the operation of self-schemas in personality.
Step 1: Watch the video and note Freddie’s self-ratings along each of the 60 words that were read to him. Write down his ratings here:

Step 2. Note that each of the 60 ratings above has an (M) indicating Masculinity, (F) indicating Femininity or an (N) beside them. Add up all of the (M) ratings and divide by 20; that is the is Freddie’s Average Masculinity Score. Do the same for all of his (F) ratings, summarizing them and dividing by 20 to get his Average Femininity Score. (Ignore the (N) ratings).
Average Masculinity (M) Score: 5.
Average Femininity (F) Score: 4.
Step 3. If Freddie’s Masculinity (M) Score is higher than his Femininity (F) score, then he would be classified as a Masculine Sex Role Type. If his Femininity (F) Score is higher than his Masculinity (M) Score, then he would be classified as a Feminine Sex Role Type. If BOTH his (M) and (F) scores are 5 or higher, then he would be classified as an Androgynous Sex Role Type.

Step 4. Now, according to Schema Theory, we should be “schematic” for words that are words that are more consistent with our Sex Role Types. To determine this, look at the list of words that Freddie recalled. This is the list of the words he recalled:

Using the complete list of the 60 words in Step 1, Circle All Words that Freddie recalled in his recall list above. Then look back to determine whether the words he recalled were (M) or (F) words and count them up (ignore all false-recalls and any words that were NOT (M) or (F) words. You are only interested in determining the number of (M) and (F) words that Freddie recalled from the original list. How many did he recall?

Number of (F) Words: 6 Step 5: According to Cognitive Schema Theory, Freddie should have recalled more Schema- Consistent words than Schema-Inconsistent words. What did you find? Do your findings support Cognitive Schema Theory or fail to support Cognitive Schema Theory?
What you found: Freddie recalled a lot of the masculine words so he was consistent in his choosing (Schema-consistent).
