Perspectives on Personality: Jung’s Word Association Test
After watching Lisa and Sarah complete Jung’s Word Association test, answer the following
questions:
1. Did you see any themes or characteristic ways of responding in their responses? If so,
what impressions did you have?
Lisa’s Responses (50-75 words) Immediately, it appeared as if Lisa was saying close
opposites of the words she was presented with. A few examples she responded to with
opposites were “white” with “black” and “sad” with “happy.” For words that didn’t have
such an obvious opposite, she responded with a very similar word. During the second
round, her answers were almost exact to her previous ones. My impression is that it’s
probably to be expected and how most people respond to the test.
Sarah’s Responses (50-75 words) In the beginning, she seemed a little unsure but was
able to get into the flow and give unique answers. Sarah’s responses seemed to come
from somewhere personal. Instead of just answering with a random or opposite word, she
answered with a part of herself. She also answered quickly with little to no thought, so I
assume that Sarah is a very expressive and passionate person.
2. Did you notice anything of significance in either of their responses? Any long latencies
to respond to any particular words, any tendencies to use particularly colorful, creative, or
imaginative associations, or anything else that struck you? (75-100 words).
It shocked me when Lisa answered “mom” after the word “dead.” She had been giving
opposites and in the three seconds that it took her to pause, I was expecting her to say
“alive.” I was also shocked when she did not give an answer for “swim.” She thought for
a few seconds and said she didn’t know. Another interesting part of the video was the
word “child.” She thought for six seconds before responding with what sounded like
“Olivia.” I think she might have been trying to draw a connection back to her personal
life and that was the reason for the delay.
During Sarah’s test, she was almost able to take the provided word and give it a deeper
meaning with her answer. Her responses were very thoughtful and vivid. I particularly
liked how she answered “grow” for “stem” and “freedom” for “to dance.” Her answers
were different during the second round, and I think this demonstrates her creative
associations and the level of depth she has. For the word “pride,” she paused for a
moment and then answered with “me.” This is not something I would expect to see out of
many people, and I think it speaks to her character.
