Perspectives on Personality: Early Memories

  1. After watching their recollections of their early memories, can you identify any themes, motivations or personality qualities reflected within them? In other words, what might these memories say about each of these individuals and the nature of their personalities or influences on them?

  2. Lisa: Lisa seems to be influenced by emotions. She seems to have sweet childhood memories during her early years as well as sweet new memories after her parent’s divorce.

Glendy: There does not seem to be much emotion at all during Glendy’s memories. They just kind of happened and she was just present for them.

Cenar: Cenar mentioned stealing without much, if any, consequences for it. He seemed to have positive memories with the neighbor kids and his brother.

Kendra: Kendra has a need to fit in and please people in her life. She is driven by the desire of her parent’s validation and also had a difficult childhood with a few good memories.

Freddie: Freddie had a rough childhood early on with a move to the States. He mentioned an accident he was in prior to making it in the States. His childhood was very emotional and even mentioned being reunited with his mom in America.

Evelyn: Evelyn seemed to be sheltered in how she interacted with others by her parent’s and how they affected that. She mentioned traveling during her childhood but her story seemed to be kind of surface level and not very deep.

John: John’s siblings seem to play a big role in his life and helped shape his personality. He also mentioned living in Peru which seems to have made the biggest impression in his life.

Shweta: Shweta moved out early on in her life. She mentioned the influence her parents had on her life

regarding her education over working and the affect that had on her life.

  1. Think about the Neo-Freudians (Adler, Jung, Erickson, and Horney). Do you see any of their concepts exemplified in any of the early recollections? Identify any three examples of how the video recollections exemplify one or more of the concepts discussed by the Neo-Freudians.

Example 1: Kendra seems to relate most the Adler’s theory of inferiority and working toward superiority. She seems to have a sense of inferiority and constantly works toward feeling superior. She has a desire to be validated when it comes to her parents. She pushes to overcome this with people pleasing.

Example 2: Adler also uses early memories to show people how they view themselves and others in the world. Freddie most relates to this the most because he was able to experience and feel so many different emotions and changes by moving to a new country at a young age and turn it into a positive thing.

Example 3: Introversion versus extraversion is also seem in the recollection videos. You can see Glendy is very shy and twiddles with her fingers/hands in the video so I would say she is introverted. However, Cenar is very extroverted and talks confidently about his memories and seems to not be afraid to talk about his mistakes like stealing.

  1. When you reflect on the early memories that you heard, which ones are most memorable to you, and why?

I relate most to Lisa and Kendra. Lisa’s memories are sweet despite the fact her parents divorced, she seemed to be optimistic about new memories with new family. Although my parent’s didn’t divorce, we learned my dad had a daughter with a woman before he met my mom so we found ways to make new memories with her. Kendra constantly feels
