Personal Project: YOUR PERSONAL BUSINESS CARD

Objective: The purpose of this project is to help you to fashion a “Personal Business Card;” a succinct statement or “calling card” that reflects your distinctive values and interests and captures elements of what is most meaningful to you. For Context: We can go to work without a purpose. We can have a reason, which may be money. But a reason is not the same thing as a purpose. The reason still leaves us feeling unfulfilled. There’s a difference between busyness and purpose. Begin by acknowledging that there is a world of difference between having a job and having a purpose. The purpose of your life is not to be as busy as possible. Indeed, one of the biggest blocks to discovering your purpose can be chronic busyness. Being busy can be purposeful and productive, but when you are permanently busy, it can also be an indication that your busyness conceals a lack of clarity, a fear of inadequacy, feelings of unworthiness and a lack of faith in your ability to help you live your purpose. In this exercise we are working to help you forge short statement that captures what is most meaningful to you in relation to the work you do, or will do. For example, a hairdresser I once counseled wrote, "Self-Esteem Consultant." "The purpose of his work was to help people feel good about themselves. The idea is to identify your real work and the purpose it serves, from your perspective. Instructions:  Step 1: Think about a memorable accomplishment in your life or your career—a time when you were at your best (if you have only limited work experience, just think about a memorable accomplishment in your life): 1. What were you doing? 2. Who was with you? 3. What role were you playing? 4. What made this experience memorable? Write a short description of that experience answering those four questions. 1. I graduated highschool 2. I was with my peers and family. 3. I was a student 4. What made this experience memorable was the fact that I was surrounded by my family and finally did something that takes years to accomplish

 Step 2: Now, write down the answer to these next two questions: 1. How would a close friend, family member, or valued colleague describe you? _______________________________________________________________ They would describe me as reserved and kind. 2. What are you known for? ___________________________________________________________________ I am known for being a teacher and cooking  Step 3. What are the 3-5 conditions that must exist in your work life to make it meaningful, fulfilling, and satisfying? o For example, these could include being focused on social justice, working with diverse populations, influencing individuals or systems, teaching others, entertaining people, etc. State these in the affirmative.  Step 4. As you look over your responses to all three steps above, note what emerges. Look for repeated values that may emerge as themes. These may be skills, such as evaluation or management; qualities, such as collaboration or community-based; or other aspects, such as important settings, populations, or methods. Write these down, rank- ordering them if possible in terms of how important they are to you.  Step 5. Now draft a straightforward and concise sentence that summarizes the most important themes that emerged—this is your purpose statement. The point is to capture in a brief sentence the essence of your unique contribution that transcends specific job descriptions or experiences and articulates an overarching theme to your career. As examples, public health educators who have used this exercise have written the following: o My purpose is to be an unconventional ambassador for change. o My purpose is to be a beacon for excellence in public health. o My purpose is to facilitate learning and growth among the next generation of leaders.  A purpose statement may be metaphorical in nature— “beacon,” “ambassador,” “bridge builder”—or not: “facilitate learning and growth.” Write the message you would like to have on your Personal Business Card below. Focus on its essential elements and make it as short as possible (3-7 words): ________My purpose is to make a positive impact in peoples lives. My purpose is to provide people with useful resources.

Personal Project: YOUR PERSONAL BUSINESS CARD
Objective: The purpose of this project is to help you to fashion a “Personal Business Card;” a

captures elements of what is most meaningful to you.
For Context:

is not the same thing as a purpose. The reason still leaves us feeling unfulfilled. There’s a

The purpose of your life is not to be as busy as possible. Indeed, one of the biggest blocks to
discovering your purpose can be chronic busyness. Being busy can be purposeful and productive,
