Study Questions College and University

Summarize the most important aspects of study motivation and ability to study. The decision for a particular field of study is mainly determined by interest in content and other intrinsic factors. Social motives are less decisive, while professional motives fall into the middle range. Motivation predicts study success and also correlates with the use of resources. With regard to the ability to study, school grades are the most common indicator of students' prior knowledge. Standardised admission tests are increasingly being used in admission procedures, and less frequently selection procedures or online portals for self- assessment. Findings show that there is a substantial relationship between school grades and later academic success. The effects of the average grade are particularly high because it is very reliable. The effects are higher in Germany than in other countries and there are higher effects for medicine and STEM subjects.

What characterizes learning behavior in university learning settings? University learning settings are characterized by a higher degree of freedom and complexity. Students have to control their learning process to a greater extent. This is not easy for all students, which is why self-regulated learning itself should be a teaching goal. Overall, the learning behaviour of students is a very good predictor of academic success.

How do different teaching orientations affect students? When it comes to the orientation of teachers at universities, a distinction can be made between a more cognitivist teacher orientation and a more constructivist student orientation. The teacher orientation considers learning as a rather passive process and associates teaching quality with well-structured input. In student orientation, learning is seen as a self- active process and teaching quality is defined by providing a meaningful learning environment. A stronger student orientation goes hand in hand with better ratings by students and a higher subjectively assessed learning gain. A side effect of student orientation is that it influences students' perceptions of their own learning process. There are still no relevant studies on objective indicators of success as far as the two teaching orientations are concerned.

Describe five components of effective training for university teachers.

  1. Content focus: Further training offers are more effective if they are directly linked to the technical content of a degree programme.
  2. Active learning: Participants should actively participate in training as learners.
  3. Coherence: no singular measures should be carried out, but related events (e. with the awarding of certificates).
  4. Duration: Effective training should last at least one year.
  5. Collective participation: Further training offers are more effective if lecturers experience themselves as a joint learning group.

What role do control beliefs play in students' learning success? What role does stress play in the learning success of students?

learning behaviour of students is a very good predictor of academic success.
