 Early “alternative rock” scene  Strong roots in San Francisco  The Counterculture  Various styles and influences o Eastern and Western musical traditions o Dense musical texture o Volume and distortion  Jefferson Airplane; Janis Joplin; Grateful Dead, etc.  Jimi Hendrix

 Jefferson Airplane, “White Rabbit” (1967)

o Grace Slick is the singer; she sings abstract lyrics with references to Alice in Wonderland, and not-so- subtle references to hallucinogenic drugs.) The music displays the elements described to the left.

Jimi Hendrix (1942–70)  Original, inventive, and influential guitarist  “Sound sculptor”  The Jimi Hendrix Experience (band)  Monterey Pop Festival (1967)  Controversial performance of the American national anthem at Woodstock  He uses his guitar to depict the sounds of falling bombs, military sirens, and even taps (military funeral music)  This was an obvious commentary on the Vietnam War
