The 1970s (cont’d):

Dance Music: Disco, Funk, and Salsa

The Disco Era (1975–80)  Disco culture first popular in African-American, Latino, and gay clubs in NYC  Mainstream popularity driven by several factors: o Black popular music: Motown, soul, and funk o Social dancing o New technologies:  synthesizers, etc. o Economic recession o Saturday Night Fever (1977)

“Bad Girls” (1979)

  • Donna Summer- very popular in “authentic” discos

  • Disco= “back to basics” dance music

 Steady beat  Medium-fast tempo  4/4 time signature  Simple, repetitive form – Simple harmonies  Straightforward lyrics

Funk

 More “edge” and “grit” than Disco  Funk emerged first  Inspired in part by James Brown (Soul)  Strong, dance-oriented rhythms  Catchy melodies  Call-and-response  Repeated rhythmic patterns  Heavy electric bass line  Intricate textures

Salsa

 Latin-based dance music  Dance clubs in NYC  Independent labels  Style combines: o Latin ballroom dance music o Afro-Cuban percussion and dance rhythms

o Modern jazz o Story-telling, gritty lyrics about social issues

“Pedro Navaja” (1978)

 “Pete the Knife” o Homage to the 1930s song “Mack the Knife”

  • Willie Colón and Rubén Blades

 Spanish lyrics; Latin percussion; piano; brass  Story: Neighborhood tough guy attacks a prostitute

  • Spoiler alert! They both die.

  • Mismatch between the musical style and the story

o Lyrics are dramatic o Music is very light- hearted and fun  Texture and intensity gradually build with the story
