Difference, disparity, and health: Achieving health equity

● Health people 2020 is to achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups ● What does this mean, and why is it important? ○ Disparities are closely linked to social, economic, and environmental disadvantages. There is an equal distribution of social resources, including education, housing, and jobs that provide health insurance and a wage that one can live on ○ Certain populations are more vulnerable to health disparities: racial and ethnci groups, religion, gender, age, mental health, physical disability, sexual orientation, geographic location ○ Health disparities enclor an enormous cost. - $35 billion in medical expenses, $10 billion in lost productivity, and almost $200 billion in premature deaths

Social determinants of health:

  • Ability to obtain quality education
  • Access to quality health care
  • Quality of food and housing
  • Income and wealth distribution
  • Employment and working conditions
  • Ability of social services

Factors that can affect your health

● Neighborhood characteristics ○ Walkability, food stores, recreational facilities. Industrial and traffic pollution (flint michigan water contamination). Neighborhood violence is also a major health factor ● prejudice , discrimination, racism, and bullying ○ Discrimination has become a key contributor to stress and poor health ○ Culture can also influence your health. Individuals may have beliefs about what causes disease and how to treat it. Trust and communication with health care providers can also affect health related lifestyle choices.

How can you contribute to health equity?

  • Cultivate mindfulness
  • Understand the benefits of diversity
  • Learn to communicate to individuals different from yourself
  • Advocate for yourself and others (“skills for behavior change” pg)

How can systemic change lead to health for all?

● “Health for all”- live in communities that have access to healthy nutrition. Physical activity, safe and affordable housing, education, living wage jobs, social support, high quality health care, freedom from discrimmination, and community resources ● How is this possible? ○ Increase minority providers ○ Increase diversity training ○ Increase preventative services and expand access to health insurance ○ Social programs ○ Neighborhood watch programs ○ Libraries and community centers ● Initiatives to increase health for all ○ City, county and state- ■ Improve standards of construction for public housing ■ Zoning changes ■ Control of pesticides and pollution ■ Better support of public transportation, health care facilities, schools and colleges ■ Colleges develop more health habits (meals in cafeteria, recreational opportunities, research)
