Political Ideology A cohesive set of beliefs that forms a general philosophy about the role of government Typically people like to believe that they can belong to more than one political ideology due to ideological inconsistencies. Examples of Ideological DIfferences across Demographic Groups Race Age Is the older generation or younger generation more likely to be liberal? (younger) Gender Gap Are females more likely to be conservative or liberal than their male counterpart? (liberal) Religion Denomination or religiosity? We have moved more towards religiosity and away from domination nowadays. Importance of Political Ideology Influences political opinion Provides a framework for individuals to translate broad values and beliefs into preferences for issue positions and political candidates Foreign Policy Military Spending Maintain peace through strength (Conservatives) Spend less (Liberals) Use of Force More likely to support military intervention around the world (conservatives) Less willing to commit troops to action (Liberals) Social Policy Abortion Support of (Liberals) Support to (Conservative) Economic Policy Scope of government Favor solutions (Conservatives) View government as a regulator (Liberals) Taxes Tax the rich more (Liberals) Keep taxes low (Conservatives) Crime How to cut crime Should solve the problems that cause crime (Liberals) Stop (Conservatives) right Guard them carefully (Liberals) Stop letting criminals hide behind laws (Conservatives) How do we acquire political Political Socialization A learning process through which most people acquire political attitudes, beliefs, and knowledge Socializing Agents Peer groups Family School Others Government Mass Media The way we think about politics in terms of values, ideology, and issue preferences are influenced the socialization process. While majority of Americans may share the same political values, there is a division among American in ideology. Political ideology is an important indicator for understanding issue preferences revealed in public opinion
