Inside Bill’s Brain

Bill Gates has worked and led many projects outside of creating Microsoft, the largest vendor of computer software in the world. These projects put into consideration the health and safety of others with Bill’s plan of sustaining life, typically in geographical regions that struggled to do so. Bill Gates used financial resources obtained through Microsoft and close friends to fund projects that worked to eradicate death due to highlighted factors such as diarrhea, polio, and global warming. Before watching the following documentaries, I did not realize the specifics and scale to these projects, but after seeing what Bill Gates strives towards on a daily basis amazed me and left me feeling a great deal of respect towards him. Bill Gates was driven by the stimulation he received through working and thinking about how to create a better future, putting him in a great role to tackle these world problems with determination. A rather sad and shocking quote I recorded from Bill Gates regarding the diarrhea crisis stated, “ 3 million times a year parents are burying their children due to diarrhea related deaths, yet I have not personally met a parent that had to do so.” In the following section of the film, Bill is explaining how many people were dying, specifically kids, thanks to highly-contaminated water in less developed countries. Many slums in 3rd world countries lacked sanitary sewage systems/piping and relied on either buckets for defection or utilizing nature’s ground. In the documentary, there was a New York Times journalist speaking of his time reporting in India, “When I asked the family of which I was interviewing where I could pee they pointed to this

gutter that directly led to where the community was collecting water.” Citizens of these underdeveloped countries were consuming water containing other people’s fecal matter, and even worse children were playing in the mud filled with it. To make matters even worse these areas dealt with constant foul smells due to sewage backup as well. A common issue with trying to implement sanitary plans was that they seem to only work in developed countries where population is normally lower, funds are higher, and operations will be kept up-to-check. Bill Gates would not stand for the following theory and got in contact with an African, engineering-student in the film who lost multiple siblings due to diarrhea-related deaths and was working to come up with a sanitary sewage system that could be implemented in underdeveloped countries with fewer resources. The African university student described how their first encounter went, “The conversation was not about whether it was too difficult, rather why it's not working, what you have tried, and what have you never dared to try.” I believe the following quote brought to light the complex problems Bill loved to tackle and figure out as many of the people closest to him described him as being fueled by complexity. Bill partnered up with a CEO and mechanical engineer named Peter Janicki to tackle the life threatening sewage crisis in underdeveloped countries. Bill and Peter thought of boiling poop which contains a lot of water that will generate steam for energy to power the sewer system. Instead of trying to create an extremely timely and expensive sewage piping system in overpopulated areas, Bill and Peter worked together to create what they called an omnipressor which performs in the manner described above. I found it interesting and quite humorous when Pete was standing by a massive pile of fecal matter and was describing the poop as containing beneficial components that could be used to fuel electricity. I was in shock watching as the omnipressor was being filled with feces and after going through the large-scale machine
