Stasis of Single-Use Plastics Issue
I) Introduction
A. Single-use plastic poses a threat to marine ecosystems.
B. The environment has the most at stake.
C. Plastic is produced from oil, which means oil companies are financial stakeholders.
The largest oil producer in the world is ExxonMobil.
D. Plastic is necessary in many industries. Most notably, the medical industry heavily
relies on plastic for sanitary reasons. Stryker is one of the largest medical equipment
manufacturing companies in the United States. They have a financial stake in the
availability and use of single-use plastic.
E. Starbucks is the largest coffee company in the world. The vast majority of their
beverages are served in plastic disposable hot or cold cups.
F. Since the environment is a passive stakeholder, the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) exists to speak on its behalf. The EPA keeps track of plastic recycling and landfill
diversion, as well as a count of how much plastic is estimated to be in the ocean.
G. Thesis: Though all the stakeholders acknowledge that plastic has potentially
dangerous consequences to the environment, they are at a stasis of policy as everyone has
different ideas on how to minimize those consequences.
II) Even companies that rely on plastic for their livelihood are turning away from single use
plastic, strongly encouraging recycling, and seeking alternatives.
A. Starbucks will eliminate plastic straws from their stores by 2020. They also have an
incentive program to encourage customers to bring their own reusable cups.
B. ExxonMobil claims to focus on sustainability in their business practices. According
to their website, their six corporate citizenship focus areas are, “reducing environmental
impacts, managing climate change risks, protecting safety and health, respecting human
rights and security concerns, promoting economic development, and ensuring industry-
leading corporate governance” (Frequently Asked Questions). Plastic production
accounts for a significant amount of their industry, yet their sustainability concerns
appear to entirely overlook that.
C. Stryker Corporation produces single use medical devices, among other things. They
have launched a program for doctors and hospitals to return the used items and have them
sanitized and prepared for a second use. Not every product can be reused, but it shows
Stryker’s concern for their environmental impact and willingness to cut down on waste.
D. Because there are currently no laws in place regarding single-use plastic, corporations
are free to make their own choices regarding their production and reclaiming of it.
III) Environmental Protection Agency’s role
A. The EPA’s website includes a portion on “trash free waters”, which focuses on plastic
in the ocean and in freshwater bodies.
B. According to the EPA, the best way to face the world’s plastic problem is to eliminate
waste at the source. Second to that is to recycle or compost, but most commercially
available plastic is not compostable. The least preferred method to deal with waste is
disposal.
