Community Problem-Solving Paper

Community Problem-Solving Paper CJA/ William Markopoulos April 8, 2019

Community Problem-Solving Paper Deterrence is defined as a principle or objective of sentencing a person guilty of a crime which ensures that the punishment is sufficient to deter the guilty person, and others, from committing the same crime.[ CITATION Duh \l 1033 ] In this paper I will explain how a community policing initiative led to a reduction in crime. The policing I have chosen is how law enforcement agencies use Facebook and other social media platforms to help identify criminals as well as audible home security systems. I will explain in detail the tactic and how the community came together to solve the problem. In the small-town police department that I work at, we see lots of various types of crime happening. This can range from auto burglaries to shoplifting or even vandalism. However, nearly all businesses have security cameras and some residences have cameras that capture on and around the property as well. Sometimes there will even be a witness who calls the police and the crime is able to be stopped before it is finished. More and more residences are involved in security systems whether it be audible or visual or a combination of both. According to an article I read, there are about 2 million burglaries each year and 66% of those are home break ins. Police are only able to solve about 13% of these cases due to a lack of witness or physical evidence. Only 17% of homes have a security system, which means the other 83% of homes are more at risk for burglaries. Homes without any security are 300% more likely to be burglarized. 95% of burglaries require some form of forced entry. Pry bars, pliers, screwdrivers, and small hammers are most commonly used to break into a residence as well as easier to conceal and are pretty common tools. [ CITATION Ala181 \l 1033 ] Since security cameras and home alarm systems are being placed on and near homes every day, less burglaries are occurring. However, for those who remain unprotected, they will

Community Problem-Solving Paper ensure that customers are not stealing. Asset protection calls the police station and the person is cited for shoplifting and will often be trespassed from the property. If they continue to come back, they will then be arrested for trespassing. The purpose of this assignment was to choose a specific community policing initiative that had led to the reduction of a crime. I chose how social media can help find criminals and how security systems help to deter criminals even further. Nearly everyone is on social media, so using the internet would be a great way to make it known that someone is wanted by the police. If we can deter crime, it gives police officers more time to focus on keeping the public safe. There are two different categories when it comes to deterrence. These categories are labeled as specific and general. The goal of both is to ensure that the punishment of a crime will prevent someone from committing it. Specific deterrence mainly focuses on the individual and relies on the assumption that the punishment is severe enough for the individual not to commit crimes in the future. General deterrence is focused on society and that potential offenders will deter from committing a crime in fear of being punished. Arguments have been conducted that criminals will not commit a crime out of fear of the punishment, especially pain. However, further studies have shown that most do not think about the pain of the punishment before committing the crime because they do not think that they will ever get a harsh punishment. [ CITATION Rob172 \l 1033 ] Deterrence is needed in all aspects of criminal justice. If we can figure out how to deter criminals every day, then the police will have the free time to focus on keeping the public safe while being able to interact with them on a more personal level instead of thinking the police is out there to punish the public, when in reality they are there to keep the community safe from it.
