1 CASE STUDY-CRITICAL THINKING

A new graduate, Nasira, has been hired as a Procurement Specialist with no much experience but is determined to work herself up in a pet supplies manufacturing firm. The current supplier for the parts closed down and she is now in the process of looking for a new one since that is her role in the company. She finds two suppliers, however, they are both suspicious in the way they conduct business. Nasira is getting under pressure as they are running low on sales for lack of enough products on the shelves, which could mean letting go of some of her colleagues and her job too might be at stake, she is in a limbo. Nasira is a newbie in the Procurement and likely does not have enough ideas on suppliers. The firm is depending on her quick decision to thrive and succeed in the manufacturing business. She has not discussed with her supervisor on her research findings in order to brainstorm as a team on the way forward. To continuously satisfy the customer’s needs, it requires a thorough search for the best suppliers for the parts required in K9 Dura Corp. Evaluation by brainstorming would be highly recommended in this scenario. As Rudy (2016) suggests, starbusting is a great tool to help in asking the important questions to examine the ideas and solve problems. Who would be the key person to discuss and come up with ideas, in this case, Nasira’s supervisor and her boss should be brought to the table to evaluate her research findings. It is also vital to consider who will benefit as a result of the solutions presented, the company will make great profits if they provide a high quality product and customers will be satisfied and retained. However, who is likely to suffer if any of these suppliers do not heed to sustainability measures namely protecting the

environment as they are both questionable when it comes to this aspect. The Midwestern supplier falls short of this evaluation phase because the water contamination caused by the company could be harmful to the residents in the short or long term and Fab-Right does not clearly state any impact on the environment whatsoever. What are the implications of choosing either of the two suppliers, what is most important aspect to consider in terms of value and efficacy of the products? Where else can they source for suppliers if these two cannot deliver and do not align to K9’s mission and ethics of conducting business? How will the outcome of the decision made affect the company and the people working for all the three firms? The sourcing team should be able to answer the question why does it matter to make a decision promptly and why it is a challenge getting the best supplier without having to question the way they run their business? Evaluation at this point is a critical process to critically analyze the suppliers’ values and quality assurance, K9DC’s goals, priorities and the timeline they have to deliver to their customers which will enable them to make a judgment for a positive outcome. Mindtools (n.) implores, considering an analysis process which involves asking questions to come up with a solution. Having considered the way out, the risks involved in choosing either or, and the person accountable for the outcome of the solution I would recommend going for the option of the overseas fabric supplier. Considering costs, Fab-Right Inc. would be a better choice than their competitor since they will not have to pay more for the parts, bearing in mind the company is in a financial constraint. The fact that the fabric is “chew-proof” shows it is of dependable quality unlike the destructible one from All-Fabric Inc. When it comes to social responsibility, nowhere does Fab- Right Inc. harm the environment using hazardous waste and therefore it is sustainable to Mother
