Writing college-level assignments can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. This week, let’s have a discussion on writing strategies. For this assignment, write at least 250 words - but not more than 500 words - answering the following: 1. Imagine that you have been asked to speak to your classmates and share your most helpful strategy for college-level writing. What would that strategy be? 2. When you write, what is the difference between writing a paper and writing a discussion post? How does the writing process differ for these two types of assignments? Furthermore, what is the difference between writing an initial discussion post and a response to one of your classmates? Use APA citations and references for the textbook and any other sources used. (Last week, you learned how to cite e-books, so be sure to at least cite the textbook in your discussion post this week.) Refer to the UoPeople APA Tutorials in the LRC for help in APA citations.

Question 1:

The strategy that I would be sharing is that before you start writing, you should study the given question. Syrett (n.) stated that “analyze is to break something, a phenomenon, or an idea into its parts and explain how those parts fit or work together”. Analyzing the question will definitely help you find the suitable approach in writing. Looking and paying attention for keywords is also useful to make your ideas easier to convey and it will help you write concisely. Once you learn this strategy it will definitely make things much easier to do.

Question 2:

When writing a paper, you are expressing your beliefs, thoughts, and declaring your position on which side are you on a particular argument or subject. Writing a paper wants you to identify the goal of your given assignment by asking yourself “why am I writing this paper?”. Think about what knowledge do you already know about the given topic; it would be easier to write if you already have an idea in mind. (Patterson, 2021) stated that “writing a paper isn’t like working math problems or reading a chapter of a book” meaning you cannot just write as soon as you understood the question, you need to plan on how are you going to write your paper.

Writing discussion post starts at the broadest point. It is necessary so that the reader can understand the topic. Each discussion post is a response to the question being asked by the instructor. Discussion post serves as an opening for students to engage discussing the topic given with their fellow classmates. Peer learning plays a big part in discussion post because you can engage discussions and learn other people’s perspective.

The difference between writing a paper and writing a discussion post is that writing a discussion post helps you learn people’s perspective and the way they think. Unlike writing a paper, after you submit your answers, the instructor will grade your work and then you are done. You won’t get to hear your classmates’ perspective on the lesson and you won’t have an interaction with them.
