The student/author who writes any written assignment, whether it is peer assessment
assignments or discussion posts is at fault for plagiarizing if they are not careful. Plagiarism is
using someone else's work or ideas and making them your own without giving credit to the
original author of the source or information. Ways in which we can avoid plagiarism is by citing
sources correctly using APA standards and creating a reference list with all the sources as to
where you got your information from when you do your research. This is the best way to prove
that you are not plagiarizing and even if it was done unintentionally, you are still at fault. Another
way to avoid plagiarism is to paraphrase and not copy information verbatim if they are not your
own. Paraphrasing means to restate a source using your own vocabulary as well as your own
ideas.
Students may plagiarize for several reasons which may include:
● Fear of failure.
● To get the best grades possible.
● Lack of comprehension.
● Laziness.
● Having poor writing skills.
Plagiarizing, an academic dishonesty, could lead to many consequences such as “you don’t
learn as much, you risk failing the course or even expulsion from school, you’re throwing away
your money and time” as well as “trashing your integrity” (2010).
During my studies at UoPeople, I will make sure to follow the APA standards and correctly cite
sources (in-text citation and reference list) in order to avoid plagiarism. One strategy I will use to
prevent plagiarism in my work includes constantly keeping track of my sources as I cite them. I
usually have a separate sheet of paper to write down my sources as I go so I could just simply
add them to my reference sheet and they will be in order as well. Another strategy that I have is
to make use of a plagiarism checker such as paperrater before I finally decide to submit my
work.
APA citation and references are very important for many reasons but to just name a few:
● It shows that you did your research.
● You are giving credit to the original author(s).
● To avoid plagiarism.
