Meaning to take ownership of learning.

To take ownership for my own learning means to be responsible for my own education. It means that I have to display self-motivation, self-direction and engagement in course materials, peer assessments and discussions. According to Plotinsky, there are various ways in which students can take ownership for their learning and some of these ways are: Asking for opinions- This gives students an opportunity to discuss and share ideas as well as to generate critical thinking skills and increase engagement. Emphasis on growth: “Show students how they are becoming better learners on a regular basis, particularly by embracing mistakes” (2019). Having students realize their growth may encourage them to embrace the learning process.

Difference between active and passive learning.

According to my research, active learning “involves the student in the instructional process through the use of relevant activities and discussions” (2018). Students are able to participate in engaging activities like this discussion forum and peer assessment at UoPeople. However, active learning is very beneficial because it improves critical thinking. Rodriquez states that passive learning “holds the student responsible for absorbing the presented information on their own terms” (2018). For example, the reading materials that are provided to us here at UoPeople, it is our responsibility to make sure we read it and understand what we have read, if not, then we are responsible for asking questions.

Role of course instructor.

Course instructors are responsible for providing students with learning materials that will help us as students achieve our learning goals. They will be available to answer any questions we may have regarding course materials, etc and create assignments and activities that will contribute to our academic, personal and professional growth.

Role of peer assessment.

Peer assessment plays a key role in the learning processbecause students are given an opportunity to share their ideas with peers as well as give and receive constructive feedback. This allows us as students to learn from the perspectives of others and to develop skills in self-assessment, also to improve our own work.
