What is stress?
According to the Cleveland Clinic “stress is the body's reaction to any change that requires an
adjustment or response. The body reacts to these changes with physical, mental, and emotional
responses. Stress is a normal part of life. You can experience stress from your environment,
your body, and your thoughts. Even positive life changes such as a promotion, a mortgage, or
the birth of a child produce stress” (n.d).
Why is stress management important and how it affected my life.
Stress may come in different forms which can affect us mentally and physically. Managing stress
is extremely important because if we don’t control the stresses we have in our lives, stress is
most likely to control us. The importance of stress management is to assist the mind and body
to adapt, to help with making your life happier and healthier.
In the past, stress has not been good to me at all. I didn’t know how to manage my stress and if
things did not get resolved sooner than later then it would take a toll on my health. I would
eventually be depressed to the point where eating became very difficult as well as functioning
properly. I was always exhausted with no energy whatsoever to do anything at all. It's just
horrible.
Stress management techniques, how they apply to my life and how they help manage
stress.
● Keeping a positive attitude: I know it can be difficult to not think negatively about certain
situations/issues but keeping a positive attitude makes things less stressful. Also, having
a positive outlook can help reduce harmful health effects on the body.
● Acceptance: I learned how to accept things that were completely out of my control. Why
stress about something you have no control of?. Acceptance can also help with
managing emotions.
● Managing my time more effectively: This gives me direction and control. It helps me to
know how much work I have to do and also increases my productivity.
