Learning Journal Unit 1

Every week in UNIV 1001, you will complete a Learning Journal assignment. In this class, your Learning Journals are composed of two parts - a reflection topic, and an APA exercise. Your reflection topic should be at least 300 words but no more than 500 words.

Reflection Topic: College Success

  1.  Write about what college success means to you. How will you define success, and what strategies will you use to achieve success? Be sure to be specific.
  2. Do you have any concerns or worries about how you will manage your course assignments or expectations? Your journal entry will only be seen by you and your instructor, so feel free to share any questions and worries you have.

APA Exercise

Every week in your learning journal for Online Education Strategies, you will practice APA format. This week, you are going to learn how to cite an e-book. These are available in the UoPeople library. Start by going to the library and find an e-book on a topic you’re interested in. Then, complete the following exercise:

  1. What is the title of the book?
  2. Who is the author (or who are the authors)?
  3. What year was the book published?
  4. What is the URL of the book?
  5. Using the information from #1-4, write the APA reference for the book you found. The reference goes at the end of your work, after all of your writing is finished.
  6. Now, let’s write the in-text citation, to use at the end of a sentence you are writing. In-text citations are always (Author, Year). Using the information from #5, write the APA in-text citation for the book you found.

Refer to the UoPeople APA Tutorials in the LRC for help in APA citations.

Reflection

College success to me is when I have engaged in self-improvement to improve myself holistically to become a better version of myself. When I tried my best in all

aspects of what I do, even if the results are not big, I feel proud of my efforts and I can count myself as being successful. The various aspects I am talking about can take the form of improved communication with my peers, enhancement of knowledge through the courses, time-management abilities to balance my courses, as well as external commitments and responsibilities. I am always mindful that it is not merely the result that matters, but the journey that is of greater importance.

Some strategies that I am committed to take include: utilizing the platform of the discussion forum to provide my course mates with honest feedback, as well as remaining open to comments from others. I also hope to forge friendships with at least 2 group mates and get to know them better through constant engagements in weekly assignments. Also to aid in remembering what I have learnt, I will utilize spaced repetition and active recall techniques to constantly refresh my memory on the knowledge which I have gained and hope to use whatever I have learnt on a small mini-project of mine, maybe to program something while doing this degree. I will also schedule my priorities and begin on my assignments early to ensure that I am able to submit them on time, despite the various concurrent activities on my plate.

As for worries, I do have some worries that I will not be able to manage the workload for UoPeople, especially when it is near my exam period for my studies commitment elsewhere since I will be having examinations in January and it will be very content heavy. I also do expect to learn a lot from UoPeople. However, as the course is fully online learning, it will be my responsibility to read up on the content, as well as clarify my doubts with the lecturers. The concern thus would only be at the beginning of the term as I try to turn it into a habit for my study schedules and keep myself in check to being productive in my work.

Lastly, I also find myself in a new kind of environment of collaborative learning. This is something that I am not used to and will need some time to adjust myself, especially for the 3 replies on the discussion answers written by my other course mates. Just not too used to reading others' answers with the responsibility of giving a rating for their work and being graded like that as well, but I’m sure I’ll be able to adapt soon.

APA Exercise

  1. Agency: Moral Identity and Free Will

  2. David Weissman

  3. 2020

In the University of the People (UoPeople), we are provided with opportunities for collaborative learning most prominently in the discussion forums. It is during our assignments where students all around the world answers, discusses and evaluate each other’s inputs. This is an advantage of online learning which could not happen without the internet.

I don’t have much experience with collaborative learning online and also in schools in terms of academics. I’m still a full time student and usually learn individually. This would be interesting as I engage more in this learning methodology through the weeks with people of all various backgrounds.
