Reflection Topic

Here is an opportunity to practice your peer assessment skills. While this assignment is

fictitious (fabricated), imagine that the following is a class assignment from a peer student. After

you read the students assignment, please assess the student’s work using the assessment

criteria. You can fill it out and then copy and paste it into the Learning Journal.

  1. Download the  Unit 2 – Fictitious Student Assignment. Read the directions for the assignment that your peer was supposed to follow so you can assess that the student understood the directions completely.
  2. Read the “Submitted Assignment” completed by your fictitious peer.
  3. Download the Fictitious Peer Assessment Criteria document. Review the grading/assessment criteria, making sure that you understand what criteria you are to grade/assess for this peers assignment.
  4. Grade/assess the assignment using the assessment form. Make sure that you provide feedback to support the grade/assessment that you have given to your peer - you should write at least 1-2 sentences for each aspect. This includes an overall feedback comment at the end.

You will  ONLY  submit the assessment grading and feedback information in the Learning Journal,

which is in the assessment criteria form.

APA Exercise

Every week in your learning journal for Online Education Strategies, you will practice APA

format. This week, you are going to learn how to cite a webpage. Find a webpage related to this

week’s peer review exercise on water pollution. Then, complete the following exercise:

  1. What is the title of the webpage?
  2. Who is the author (or who are the authors)? Note: an author can also be an organization. The Center for Disease Control is an example of an organization that is the author of a webpage.
  3. What year was the webpage published? Note: if there is no date, you can write “n.” instead.
  4. What is the URL of the webpage?
  5. Using the information from #1-4, write the APA reference for the webpage you found. The reference goes at the end of your work, after all of your writing is finished.
  6. Now, let’s write the in-text citation, to use at the end of a sentence you are writing. In-text citations are always (Author, Year). Using the information from #5, write the APA in-text citation for the webpage you found.

Note: If you are struggling, try reviewing the UoPeople APA tutorials.

Reflection Topic

I’ll talk about the good points of this assignment before talking about the portions that you can greatly improve in. Firstly, I think that this paper is well organized. There is both an introduction and a conclusion included together with clear headings stating the parts which you are answering in a good flow. This is helpful in identifying to which part of assignment are you answering to.

Furthermore, I think you have done well in providing information on the main water pollutants and possible causes. Just that, you have concentrated on the nutrient pollution from fertilizers in your assignment. I would like to know more about the possible causes for the other types of pollution in your area like plastics, e-coli, solvents and petroleum.

Lastly, I think you have adequately described how your interest in gardening could be applied to help improve water quality in your community. Planting those deep-rooted grass seems to be an effective way of dealing with water pollution. However, I don’t really get how reducing car usage helps with dealing with water pollution. It seems like it has a more direct impact on air pollution than water pollution. Maybe you can elaborate in more details on how it actually helps?

For the portions that you can greatly improve in, there are three in number. Firstly, you have failed to write within the words limit that you should be writing for this assignment. The second point which is related to this is that I think you could have elaborated more on how your community compare to others when it comes to water pollution like for example: Where or which communities are you comparing with? How far are they from you? What is the main industry the people are working in and the extent that it contributes to the water pollution in their area? What are some of the measures that they took in dealing with water pollution and are they effective? How about your own area? I think these would be helpful in helping you get the additional 200 words to meet the word count. As what you wrote for this component is too brief, it affects the word count of your assignment by a lot which can affect your grading.

Last but not least, you can further improve in your spelling and in particular, grammar. I recommend that you do a spelling and grammar check by using Microsoft Word or download Grammarly to do a similar check. I have found the latter to be useful in their promptings of better word choices in addition to the grammar and spelling checks. To start off, you have spelled environmentally wrongly in the introduction. In addition, I think you mean, “Reducing” when you write, “Reusing pollution...”. (Second line, Second last paragraph) These can be avoided easily with what I have said above and checking your work before submission. The sentence structure is also a little weird when you say, “Water pollution especially we need to do better and we can reduce our levels of water pollution.” I think you can better phrase it as, “We need to do better in reducing water pollution in our area.” There are also areas whereby a comma should be inserted as the sentence is too long. These are: “In my community we live along a river system so it is especially important ...” (First line, second paragraph), “Unfortunately this gets into the water, ...” (Third line, third paragraph), “First, I like to go for walks, and I think if we had more park paths and usable side walks” (Seventh line, third

to be further elaborated upon hence I only accept one of the skills which the student wrote.

In element 4, I did a word count using Microsoft word and found a total of 506 words being written excluding sources. With no word count provided, I gave the student 6 points in line with the rubric.

In element 5, the assignment is not clearly written with much errors as I have placed in the feedback, hence I have given the student 0 points for this assignment.

Lastly, in element 6, the paper included an introduction and a conclusion hence I gave the student 10 points in rating in line with the rubric given.

Please let me know in the comments if I have done anything wrongly.

Discussion Forum

Writing college-level assignments can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. This week, let’s have a discussion on writing strategies. For this assignment, write at least 250 words - but not more than 500 words - answering the following:

  1. Imagine that you have been asked to speak to your classmates and share your most helpful strategy for college-level writing. What would that strategy be?
  2. When you write, what is the difference between writing a paper and writing a discussion post? How does the writing process differ for these two types of assignments? Furthermore, what is the difference between writing an initial discussion post and a response to one of your classmates?

Your Discussion should be at least 250 words in length, but not more than 500 words. Use APA citations and references for the textbook and any other sources used. (Last week, you learned how to cite e-books, so be sure to at least cite the textbook in your discussion post this week.) Refer to the UoPeople APA Tutorials in the LRC for help in APA citations.

  1. College-level writing can be challenging as one may often procrastinate when required to perform such writing. If approached by a classmate for a helpful strategy to

aid in college-level writing, I will recommend the strategy of “discuss what you read, see, and hear” as a pre-writing strategy (University of Minnesota Library Publishing, 2015). Discussion is crucial as it helps one to gain clarity of their ideas through information processing (Cashin, 2011). Discussions help one to perceive the same issue from various perspectives and learn about the dynamics between varying points of

view. When feedback and opinions are provided by others, individuals can also receive inputs to better refine their ideas. By discussing, one becomes aware of their assumptions, allowing them to investigate them to gain a better understanding of the content (Stephen & Stephan, 2005). This can aid in the brainstorming of content for college-level writing which is very tedious and can be alleviated by having discussions

with others.

  1. The difference between writing a paper and writing a discussion post can be seen in several aspects, including the point of view taken for the writing, the sources used, as well as the intention of the writing.

A paper will require me to write using the third person point of view as it is often more scholarly and objective, such as “children tend to mature as they grow older”. Whereas a discussion post may allow me to write in a first-person narrative since it is often more conversational, such as “I matured as I grew older”, as requirements of questions in

discussion posts can often include personal thoughts/experiences and reflections. Furthermore, the language used often differ. While a paper strictly uses formal rules of grammar, one can afford to be informal in discussion posts.

A paper often includes content from resources such as journal articles, government

websites, and newspaper articles. Often it follows a structure of introduction, literature review, data discussion, analysis, and conclusion (Thomas & Patricia, 2004). However, a discussion post is often related to the module and requires students to utilize their course text as a primary resource, coupled with external resources. It may not have a fixed structure and is fairly free and easy.
