Perspectives on Personality: Jung’s Word Association Test
After watching Lisa and Sarah complete Jung’s Word Association test, answer the following
questions:
1. Did you see any themes or characteristic ways of responding in their responses? If so,
what impressions did you have?
Lisa’s Responses (50-75 words)
She often chose words that were opposite to the word given. As an example, he said
<hot=, and she responded with <cold=. I thought her response to <pride= caught my
attention the most. Both times, she thought for a while about the word and then
responded. It seemed like pride might have been a tough word to address or maybe
just too complex to put into one word.
Sarah’s Responses (50-75 words)
Her responses were mostly focused on personal, emotional associations with the
words. A few times the response felt very vulnerable. There was a lot of depth and
honesty. It also didn’t take her long to respond either which made her seem very
emotionally intelligent or self-aware.
2. Did you notice anything of significance in either of their responses? Any long latencies
to respond to any particular words, any tendencies to use particularly colorful, creative, or
imaginative associations or anything else that struck you? (75-100 words).
Lisa paused a few times. A couple of responses she gave were interesting to me. For
one, the word <sitting= was presented and she paused for a second then delivered
the answer <cold=. This made it seem like she thought of a memory when she was
sitting and felt cold in that memory, or she doesn’t like not moving and being still.
Another response that was interesting to me was the response of <cleaning= to the
word <cooking=. Made it seem like cooking is a chore or just another job for her.
Not necessarily enjoyable.
Sarah responded quickly with emotional responses but, one response that she
responded to the quickest was the word <pride=. She immediately responded with
<normal= which made me believe that she either feels prideful herself, deals with
prideful people in her social circle, or feels that we live in a prideful society. Her
responses changed a lot the second time around which made me think she shifts her
perspective on things often or just got tired.
