Perspectives on Personality: Early Memories

  1. After watching their recollections of their early memories, can you identify any themes, motivations, or personality qualities reflected within them? In other words, what might these memories say about each of these individuals and the nature of their personalities or influences on them?

  2. Lisa : Stepfamily, not a lot of money. A good relationship with their stepfather. Enjoyed being outside. Has faun memories of childhood.

Glendy: Good times with mother holding hands. Enjoyed performing arts. Enjoyed food. Seemed to not have money growing up. Has faced a lot of adversities. Her mother was not the best parent. Very smart

Cenar : Loved being outside with neighborhood kids playing. Stole candy from grocery stores. Enjoys control. Enjoys being in charge. Came from money. Seems to have a happy childhood when he speaks.

Kendra : Did not like to be told what to do. Did not have a lot of money growing up. Has great memories with grandmother. Has a sense of independence; Parents are separated. Wanted to fit in.

Freddie : Immigrant, moved to the U. very young. Remembered feeling unsafe and was culture shocked. Was in a car accident trying to get to the airport to get to

America. His mom was living in America for 4 years before the family was able to come.

Evelyn: Endearing, loving mother, with strict parents. Mom was an only child, adopted by grandparents. Father was German, they vacationed there often. Enjoyed her quiet time and being creative at home. Wanted to be included and feel <normal=. Fun memories from a family vacation. Stopped visiting family in the fourth grade. Sports games. Enjoys traveling. Never married, no kids, no relationship

John: Big family, not very close to siblings. Lived in Peru. Great mom, not close to dad. They weren’t very family-oriented. Enjoyed being outside. Enjoys success. Likes his independence. Family conflict.

Shweta : Moved away from her family at a young age. Her family is very important to her. There is a strong family dynamic. Very strict father with a temper. There were a lot of expectations put on her as a child.

  1. Think about the Neo-Freudians (Adler, Jung, Erickson, and Horney). Do you see any of their concepts exemplified in any of the early recollections? Identify any three examples of how the video recollections exemplify one or more of the concepts discussed by the Neo-Freudians.

Example 1: Adler’s concept that early memories shape personality. Everyone speaking about their early childhood memories starts to show aspects of their personality while telling stories or based on what they chose to remember

Example 2: Alder’s quotes about inferiority made a lot of sense. If you look at what a lot of them talk about in their childhood, they all seem to want to fit in and be better than they are. There are a lot of comparisons.

Example 3: Jung had his theory that basically everything in life happens out of meaningful coincidence. Like when Freddie’s family finally gets the chance to go to America and then they get into a car accident.

  1. When you reflect on the early memories that you heard, which ones are most memorable to you, and why?

None of the memories shared really stuck with me, due to the fact that they were interesting but not relatable.
