Perspectives on Personality: Chapters of My Life

After watching the three videos where Cole, Evelyn, and Taylor discuss the Chapters of Their Lives, answer the following questions. Please put your answers in a word document and restate the questions. A good guide for answering the questions completely is including 5-10 sentences in your answer.

  1. How did they organize their chapters? What did they use as <meaningful markers= to distinguish the beginnings and endings of their chapters?

They organized their chapters by starting off with their earliest significant memory. They used emotions and age as meaningful markers to distinguish the beginnings and endings of their chapters.

  1. Were there any particularly salient stories or memories associated with any of their chapters?

Their memories were based on who made them feel a certain way such as a parent or classmates.

  1. Did you see any themes or threads running through their chapters that spoke to core themes or plot lines in their stories?

The running theme is that everyone’s first memories started with a specific event that made them feel happy or a specific person they interacted with.

  1. From listening to their stories, can you say anything about them that might distinguish them from one another?

Cole seems like a hard worker- he’s had to build himself from the ground up and decided to grow as a person through reading and learning instead of resorting to drinking/other bad habits to deal with his childhood issues. Evelyn seems spoiled, likes to brag about her blessed life, and seems to want approval from those around her. Evelyn looks like a deer caught in headlights, maybe a little self-obsessed. Taylor seems to care about what others think of him as seen by his earliest memories- dress code in school as well as his long hair phase. Overall, he seems like an educated young man, aware of what is happening in the world right now. He seems grounded, he’s found himself and knows what he wants to do in the future.

Chapters of My Life

Now it’s your turn. The use of Personal Narratives derives from multiple sources and can serve multiple purposes. Erik Erickson’s theory is often described as a <lifespan= personality theory and for that reason is often covered in courses on developmental psychology, as well as personality. In this exercise you are going to be asked to consider your life as if it were a book, and do the following:

Step 1: Write the chapters of your book and give each chapter title. You can start any place

you would like (For example: with your birth or with a <preface= that precedes you) and organize it any way you might like. There are no <right= or <wrong= answers; what is important is that the chapters are meaningful to you and that they capture some element or elements of your experience and your life as you have developed. (Please develop at least 3 chapters with 4- sentences explaining each chapter)

Well, Here I Am: This chapter would be an introduction to me, my family, and the things experienced by my parents from the time I was birthed, to around the time I started middle school. My birth would be the first detail of a strange biological discrepancy pertaining to me and my father. A small comment, meant to be a harmless joke, made to my parents. This comment was towards my father: <Are you sure this your baby... She looks more Korean than my baby.= This comment led to DNA being administered for me and my father when I was around the age of 11, confirming that I, in fact, am a 99% match to my father. Furthermore, this chapter would describe the relationship between me and my father, compared to my other siblings.

From Arizona to Florida: This chapter would take you through the journey of my and my family’s move from Chandler, Arizona to Pensacola, Florida. This move was discussed among my family for about 1-2 years before we finally made the move in February of 2013, to be closer to my dad’s side of the family This is a day that I will never forget. I never got to say goodbye to any of my friends. I went from everything I knew, the people, scorpions, dry heat, rocks, and cacti, to everything that was foreign to me from humidity, forests, and beaches to flying roaches. This move had a dramatic impact on my character; And for a moment, I was lost.

The Smalltown Advocate: As I grew and matured in Florida, I made a lot of new acquaintances and friends. Some were great friends, who I still have a relationship with today. Others, I did not have such good experiences or relationships with. This chapter would go on to tell the many stories I have with people and the different individuals who either helped me move forward and/or those who knocked me down a few pegs. More specifically, the chapter would focus on who I aided and how, as well as how that advocacy helped or harmed me personally. I have many of these stories.

Where Do I Go Now?: Now I am an adult. I graduated from J. High School in 2019. I am now a 21-year-old adult, approaching my senior year of college. I have my own car, my own apartment, and I pay my own bills. Life is very different now, drastically different 4 and this is something to talk about. This chapter would give insight into the adult world experienced by

for you in your chapters? (4-5 sentences will be sufficient to answer the question)

If I were to complete this book, I would label the genre as Adventure. My life itself has difficulty been one heck of a journey for me. Life feels like a never-ending adventure novel. The story would have many ups and downs, life-or-death situations, etc. A very interesting and lengthy novel, it would be.

Step 5. Take a look at Erik Erikson’s stages of development. Do you see any of the issues or

<crises= that he identifies as intersecting with your chapters in any way? (4-5 sentences will be sufficient to answer the question)

I find that Erik Erickson’s stages of development correspond really well with my chapters and their organization. During Infancy, up until school age, with the question of who’s child I really was, I experienced the different <crises= he gave such as mistrust, doubt, and inferiority, feeling like I didn’t really know much of where I came from or belonged. This was one of the main issues I experienced during different stages of my development. Another relevant crisis that I have experienced in correlation with Erickson’s stages of development is intimacy versus isolation which is generally experienced during early adulthood. This is something that I am still experiencing and navigating through.

Step 6. In reflecting on the chapters of your life in this way, have you learned anything about

yourself? Is there anything interesting or surprising? (4-5 sentences will be sufficient to answer the question)

Honestly, there is a lot about myself that I always knew. Such as, I am very different from my family and very different from anyone I have ever met. But what I just realized is that many of my relationships and friendships with people do not last or remain constant. This has created a cycle of confusion for me and those around me. As I write out these chapters, I discover that I have always been the same, as far as my character goes, but my mindset and actions have revolutionized with everything I experience.
