Cytoplasmic Endomembrane System
The organelles of the endomembrane system (Endoplasmic Reticulum, Golgi complex, Endosomes,
Lysosomes, & Vacuoles) forms a dynamic & integrated network in which materials are shuttled back &
forth from one part of the cell to another.
Materials are shuttled between organelles; e.g. from the Golgi
complex to the plasma membrane in small, membrane-
bounded transport vesicles. Transport vesicles buds off from a
donor membrane and moves through the cytoplasm in a
directed manner, often pulled by motor proteins that moves
on tracks formed by microtubules & microfilaments of the
cytoskeleton. When these vesicles reach their destination,
they fuse with the acceptor membrane compartment &
release the vesicular contents.
Biosynthetic Pathway
A biosynthetic pathway is a pathway in which proteins
are synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum, modified
during passage through the Golgi complex, and
transported from the Golgi complex to various
destinations, such as lysosomes, plasma membrane,
plant vacuoles etc. Biosynthetic pathway is also
referred as the secretory pathway because most proteins
synthesized in the ER are destined to be discharged
(secreted) from the cell.
Secretory activities of the cell are divided into two
types:
(i.) Constitutive Secretion: During constitutive
secretion, materials are transported in secretory
vesicles from their sites of synthesis and
discharged into the extracellular space in a
continual manner. Most cells engage in
constitutive secretion. It contributes to the
formation of extracellular matrix and the
plasma membrane.
(ii.) Regulated Secretion: During regulated secretion, materials are stored as membrane-bound
packages and discharged only in response to an appropriate membrane stimulus. It occurs,
